A good phaser array?

stfanboystfanboy67 Posts: 388Member
I've been trying to figure out how to make a good phaser array. I've seen one tutorial online but it looks simple. I can't figure out how to a get the ribbed pattern. What is the best way of doing this? Attached is a example of what I want to do. Credit to Prologic for the image.

Thanks guys.

Build it 'straight', then bend it into shape?

Extrude a profile along a spline pulled from the saucer mesh (allows it to follow the hull) Depending on app you can control the banking etc. Then rotate the face on the end for the round cap or model the cap (depends on the ship type some are not rounded) You then can extrude in the ribs from the mesh, or just texture it. I use a checker procedural tightened up and stuffed into the diffuse and bump slots and maybe in other slots such as aniso roughness gloss etc. (again depends on app and package)

This is why I dislike tuts on how to make specific things. You need to grasp how to model shapes and how to approach a particular object instead of memorizing methods to produce the shape.
Each day we draw closer to the end.

Thanks Nano. Also thanks Madkoi. You have been helpfull with my questions. Maybe someday my starships will look almost as good as yours. :D

Are you working in blender? I could help then. There's a simple way to make a nice phaser array in blender, you use the subsurf mod.

You make the hull and apply any subsurf mesh, then you selects the faces/verts you want. Duplicate, then seperate into a seperate object.

Now extrude them a little downward 'into' the hull, and then extrude the original verts/faces outward from the hull. Very slightly scale the outward verts down a hair, now apply a subsurf mod, or 2-3, to the array.

Here's what I got doing that:

Don't have the ribbed effect down yet, might involve selecting alternate faces, extruding and scaling them a bit.
