what methods do you guys use to lay out your UV's?

I've been struggling with getting the UV's on the bridge module of my TOS Connie revamp to lay worth a crap. I'm trying everything, but I still get stretching errors making it look terrible.

    when laying out UV's i tend to use a Checker board pattern as a temporary color map to make sure my scaling of UV's is accurate to what i want besides that i use a lot of planar mapping and stitch together from there
