Why are the ships all lined up by class? That's a little odd. Plus, as I mentioned on the Romulan one, the ships are all in straight lines, which seems unlikely. And, finally, the part you have glowing on the Excelsior-class nacelles didn't glow in any of the films or TV shows. (nothing glowed on the Excelsior nacelles, only the bussards did on the Ent-B nacelles) On the plus side, I love the background and I certainly wouldn't want to run into that fleet in a dark solar system.
You want to get where? You have to go through use first! Very nice image, though I do agree that having the ships aligned by class does seem odd if it is meant to portray a "real" fleet deployment. It does look cool that way, though!

I agree, that's weird, you should have mixed them up. I like the wormhole. Where did you get that bg pic? On the Excelsior nacelles, in the Voyager episode Flasback, the nacelles did glow, although I don't know why. http://voy.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/3x02/flashback117.jpg
*lol* Yeah, re: the deployment, I was thinkin' bout that too..
But if u think about it, if there really WAS a fleet of that size blockading a line, they MIGHT line ships up by class etc.
For example:
1) All ships fire a volley of torps
2) At same time, the line of Defiant Class ships would surge towards the enemy to hit em with pulse phasors when the torps impact and weaken the baddy's shields
3) The Galaxy Classes would break into 3 groups, flanking left, right, and straight ahead
4) The New Orleans would go in to back up the Defiants
5) The Excelsiors would reform the line as backup.
6) The Nebulas would advance to support the groups of Galaxys
7) The Proemthues Classes would split and come in hard in a 'bubble' formation, coming at the enemy from all forawrd axis
Thatd be much easier to co-ordinate if the ships were lined up neatly I reckon?
...of course, i`ve NEVER won an online game of Command And Conquer, so whadda I know..
As for the Excelsior glows, I know, sorry traditionalists, but without that blue glow, the ship is too boring!!
I was glad hen it was mistakenly added to the show, now its CANNON!
(I had tried to use the SCIFI-ART Excelsior, but when I lined them up into groups and tried to 'bend' them into formation, they went all sqew-iffy!)
But really, I mostly set them up that way in the image because of MEMORY requirements - My ole PC kept crashing with more than 10 ships in the scene, so I had to do MANY composite passes...!
Still too symmetrical. And while your idea of a blocakde tactic seems nice, it is too chaotic after the volleys are fired. That's why ships form up in groups prior to battle so they are easier to follow their vessels of escort.
Also, such a full-front wall has the drawback that enemy vessels can slip through very easy, once a few ships are missing as holes quickly form and enlarge.
Very nice. I like the image, and yes I agree. The enemy might think twice, and this actually reminds a little bit of uh STO, I mean heck with all the ships running around =] [damn hard to park the ships so nice and neat in-game]

I'm late to this party, but the nacelles on the Excelsior glowed throughout at least season 6 and 7 of DS9. So consistently that you'd have to say that Starfleet upgraded her at some point during the Dominion War...
That last one is actually the last episode of Voyager. My guess is that the CG model was lit up like that (perhaps by mistake? Who knows?) but it is certainly cannon now.
I don't count anything done on CGI models in DS9 or Voyager. (at least, for ships that had physical models originally) But, you're right, they did glow. Andrew also pointed that out. (I was hoping he'd have forgotten those episodes ) I love the battle sequences on DS9, but they did a lot of things "wrong" with the CGI models. The Excelsior and Miranda models had glows where they should not have (yes, it can be argued that they had upgraded designs) and the Galaxy-class ships had no names or registry numbers. There were other issues, but I don't remember what because I haven't watched them for a while.
There's a (randomly, not particularly related...) idea, Dev! Do a "Starfleet boneyard" - maybe a station with a bunch of older Fed designs that have been decommissioned You could throw a drydock in there and have them pulling bits off her. I don't think anyone's ever done a scene like that before...

(and the thumbnail DOES kinda look cool..)

Or, at least provide someplace to d/l ALL your old meshes and any new "frankenstein fleet" style stuff you've been toying with lately.
