Thanks. I'm not sure if there's a way to to remove the anti aliasing effect without massively distorting the image. The original image is much larger than the one I posted above.

i use sketchup and find that the best thing to do is to create ships in sketchup, separate the parts which you want to make movable and use for example an online translation service like babel 3d to convert the model to 3ds or use sketchup to export a collada( i have had problems with this). import the 3ds file or collada into blender then group the geometry back into the neccessary parts and reassemble them into your ship. then start animating.
You're guess is as good as mine. For what it's worth, I've moved away from 3d and sketchup, at least for the time being. I haven't done anything new or even tried to work on anything new in months. I've been writing and trying to work more on my 2d drawing skills.
Sorry about that. They should have come up as clickable thumbnails, though for some reason the new photobucket is just posting them as images. Anyway, I went back and included direct links to each image. Click the link and you'll get the full sized image.
I hadn't modeling anything in 3d in months, so I finally sat down and started working on something new. It's not really related to anything, but still in my usual wheelhouse. I guess I was just messing around and wanted to do something in SU, before I completely lost whatever skills I had.
It's supposed to be a missile launcher turret, that can be mounted to a vehicle, though I didn't get around to building the rest of the turret. Maybe I'll get back to it.
Thanks. I started a model of this version, but I don't have the time to stick with it. I can either write and draw 2d or I can do 3d and get far less writing done and no 2d drawing, but I can't balance all three, and I have to write. Plus, I can draw 2d in far great detail and achieve concepts that I've never been able to achieve in 3d. I'm sure that if I had the time to devote to improving my 3d skills, I could get there, but there are only so many hours in the day and when I work in 3d, it eats up a lot of time very quickly.
That being said, if someone else wanted to take a shot at her, I'd definitely be fine with that and help in anyway I could.
For the time being though, the Essex will remain a 2d concept.
Here's a more recent concept for an automated delivery vehicle, in three different lengths.

The new Essex is a beauty, deliciously intricate and on the firm side of sci-fi. Will we see a 3D model of it? It seems to be a daunting project.
