Here's a project I've been dabling with for a few months now. Since I'm wrapping up the Federation I figured I'd give you a sneak peak. This is based on Matt Jeffries' original shuttle design before he moved in a more cost-conscious direction and gave us the Galileo that we all know and adore.

I've attempted this ship before and was never really happy with it. When I went back to it this time I realized how much more like conventional aircraft some (not all) of his original sketches were.

Actually this is kind of cheating since I've decided to scap the current mesh and try and get something a lot cleaner.

Here's the progress so far:

I redid the base mesh with bsurfaces. And boy howdy am I loving B-mesh! Between that and vertex slide I got this far MUCH faster than I would have the last time. It makes adding control loops and moving stuff around SO much easier. So far it's still all quads.

Seems a little thin compared to the original drawings. You might want to widen it just a tad.

Depends on the drawing. Jeffries did cross sections that are a little skinnier than what I have here. But yes, he did some double-wides as well.

As you can see in the attachment, pretty skinny.

Judging by those pictures that might refer to the other shuttle, the fighter looking one.

Oh, he was definitely going that route again in the 70's for Phase II (the drawing you posted). But all the sketches I posted are from TOS, not Phase II.

I decided to go with the skinnier cross section after I looked at the sketches I posted, put that together with Jeffries' passion for aviation, and considered the fact that he tried to drag the design back to that for Phase II. I've done some tests with the "wings" and I think it looks much better than the "wide-body" that you usually see.

Great start! I don't think I ever saw this skinnier version in 3D, this would be interesting.

Cool. This was a very nice design that Jeffries came up with. It's unfortunate they couldn't build it.

Did the cutout on the top and added the forward window. I hate adding windows. I had tried adding three ports like on the Galileo but it was a little boring. Plus Jeffries drew the cyclops version in several of his drawings.

Looks great Tallguy. I tackled this shuttle a few years ago but went with the "wide" version, HERE. I can't wait to see what it looks like more aircraft like fuselage.

really wished they could of done Matt's vision originally, they do look more "realistic" than that boxy Galileo.

Love the sketches--heach, that could even be a secondary hull with a wrap-around shuttlebay on the tail--as in one of the STO finalists.

    Thanks, everyone.

Red Spar, I really liked your take on aridas sofia's blueprint of the shuttle. I've been talking with him about this version. He's still more of a fan of the "wide body" but there you are. :)

Added some detailing to the main body and started roughing out the engine supports. Not perfect yet but I think Jeffries' crazy wing design might work. This is the first time I've ever thought that.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone in the U.S.A.

Looking great Tallguy. The narrow version is infinitely more practical. My version took up a huge amount of hanger space (just barely cleared the Enterprise's hanger bay doors when I did it all to scale). This has a nice Lear Jet feel to it.

I'll definitely be building a Cage-era hangar for this to go in. We'll see how it fits.

Little more work on the struts, getting closer to MJ's profile. Added vent widgets and obviously decided to see if I could open the doors. Oh, and I added that stripey trim thing.

Those that are digging the airplane-y look, thank you.

I'm a fan of Star Trek but was never a HUGE fan like some other people. Although to the "normal" world I'd probably be labeled a geek. :)

I've never seen this shuttle before. And I have to say I'm quite smitten by it. A wonderful design! It seems so much more in keeping with the aesthetic of the TOS Enterprise. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. Thanks for posting this Tallguy!

taking the size of this and the wide body, seems like the enterprise would have only had like possibly 2 narrows and a wide in that small hanger bay ;)

nice work, have i said how much i love it yet? :P

Nice, very interesting design, kinda looks like a cross between Star Trek and a Flash Gordon style rocketship. Very interesting wing configuration.

    Coming along very nicely Tallguy...

Here is a shot I made to scale with my wide version parked in the Enterprise hangar bay HERE

As you can see it has room for one shuttle and maybe a bag of luggage with it...

I never liked the rear landing strut that Jefferies designed. I came up with my own folding design, but no one else liked it but me..

Might be nice to have the narrow and widebody together for a scene. Call the wide-body a civilian version--or one assigned to shuttlecarriers and starbases only.

That's a good idea, to be fair. Used for surface-to-starbase work and such, like the bus to work, only the suburbs are a planet and the job's in orbit of the next planet over.

Dang that is a smaaaaaall shuttle.
Love the progress on this. Looking very good!

Hey gang! BACK FROM THE DEAD!

I started over from scratch. (OK, the nacelles are existing, but I'll re-do those.)

I've tackled this before over the years, but this (I feel) is the closest I've gotten to MJ's "feel".

    Feedback is always welcome.

Looking great- not hugely familiar with the source material, but the modelling looks very clean. It may just be me, but I can definitely see areas that could have inspired the compound curves seen in some of the earlier TNG shuttle designs. :)

I seem to recall that Andy Probert's original shuttle designs were ALSO too difficult and expensive to build. :)

Don't have anything to post at the moment. The holidays have me by the verts.
