This is a ship i've been working on on and off for a while now - only been showing it on newtek boards but thought i might put it up here too now that its starting to get there

basically its a 5km long heavy intradictor - designed to trap and hold and destroy hostile fleets by itself or with its task group

sadly my modeling skills aren't up there with the best so to close and the effect breaks down :( but i do love the overall design

did design it with a imperial remnant/yuzhan vong story in mind but sadly i doubt i'll ever get around to making that a reality - the thought of texturing this thing gives me nightmares!!

    Welcome Stormcloud!
Amazing looking ship! It manages to look very classic yet very original, and that's something pretty hard to achieve. :thumb:

thanks for comments - the way i think of the design is the lovechild of a SSD and an intradictor (little and large could be a difficult hmmmmm pairing :) ) i also looked at battleships from wwII era and designed the tiered gunnery deck with that in mind - i think the classic llooks comes from the form following function (within star wars design limits) works out well though nearly every angle can be covered by half the guns on the ship

for the star wars geeks its armaments include

    36 Heavy turbolasers
    18 Heavy beam cannons
    12 Heavy Ion cannons
    112 Turbolasers
12 Heavy anti capital torpedo tubes
    16 Proton torpedo batteries

    10 fighter squadrons
    - 6 tie interceptor MkII (another ship i'm working on)
    - 2 tie bombers MkII (and another)
    - 2 long range assault fighters ( haven't worked out the specific ships here yet)

:) i like thinking up the details and story for my ships almost as much as modeling them - that why this ship exists couldn't help but think that the empire would have done a better job against the vong!

Cool. What I like about the detailing is that it looks like a real physical model in areas. Rather well done. I will say that your escorts are ubermassive for corvettes!!

    Looking forward to your fighters..:)
  • StormcloudStormcloud2 Posts: 0Member
the escorts are cruisers not corvettes - 8 heavy turbo lasers 12 turbo lasers and a proton torpedo battery - is based off the tantive 5 but much larger - now the little ship in the space scene your right that is a light corvette but its tiny and is simply much much much closer - design is rather to close for comfort to the defender from swtor mmo - i did want it to look like it was in the same family as i did design that one after seeing it but didn't realise just how close i was - so that one i cant claim that one as fully my own (shame as i prefer it to the swtor one)

if you want to see the fighters if you look very carefully there are 2 docked to the corvette wraith squadron style - though i grant you that not easy to spot in that image

Looks good. Interesting (albeit a bit unusual) to see those little ellipsoid things (like on a MonCal) on an imperial ship... but if it's post-RotJ then maybe it's justifiable?

Oh, and it's probably better that someone tells you this sooner rather than later: you want inter-, not intra-

    Beautiful design!
Can you show us close ups of the escort cruisers and corvette too.
    Well done.

Welcome.Keep working at them and let's see the final result.

ok the other ships - here is the MkII TIE Interceptor

basically its a interceptor with shields and hyperdrive twin concusion missile launcher and even a rear facing turret

it has 2 hyperdrive systems - one suitable only for a small jump to the outer system to be picked up - the other is the pods attached to the outside of the wings - they can be used in combat but they do reduce the crafts manuverability

    - basically its an x-wing

Here is the cruiser and corvette - like i said the corvette is abit close to the jedi defender from swtor but i do like it none the less - the cruiser is based off the tantive v and the hammerhead frigate thingy from swtor/kotor

I am digging these designs - very nice! :D I eagerly await your next update. :)

Very cool design indeed! The dreadnaught has quite the evil empire vibe to it, some closeups of that would be awesome too! Really nice work on the cruiser but I really like what you did with the corvette. Awesome all around!

The side docking bays look too small on the cruiser compared to the fighter on the corvette.Does the cruiser carry fighters,if so it should be much larger than the corvette.Am I wrong?
    Still love the designs though.
  • StormcloudStormcloud2 Posts: 0Member
hmmm - it really wasn't ment for fighters but transports but frankly they would be larger than the fighters (which it does carry 4 of but in the lower docking bay) -so yeha your right it is abit small - never checked it for scale when modeling.... kinda like the look of it though so might have to invent another reason for having a small docking bay...... maybe a forced boarding bay/platform of some kind?

You could also double the cruiser size when in the same shot as the corvette.
Also picked up that the corvette is actually the size of a patrol craft or gunboat because of the scale of the fighters,a typical corvette is 110m to 250m,yours is no more than 80m.Remember a TIE interceptor is 10m in length.Your fighter is about the same length, but wider than the interceptor(love your version more).
I really love your corvette design, just wish it was a bit bigger, with a TIE rack internally for four plus the two on the side, slightly smaller to scale.
I applaud your original designs, cannot get enough of the smaller vessels as everyone just concentrates on the super stardestroyers and not the escorts. Thanks again for your great effort.

The detailing on this has a really nice ISDI feel to it; relatively simple yet very complex looking at a distance. I think another layer of modeled panel and bump detail to replace the slightly blotchy texture on the hull would really improve the ship, but I do quite like the design.
  • StormcloudStormcloud2 Posts: 0Member
hmmm i think doubling the size of the cruiser isn't a good idea - would start to push it past cruiser level - without checking i couldn't tell you exactly how long it is but doubling it would probably make it bigger than a victory class star destroyer in length if not perhaps in volume - could possibly make it 10% bigger without having to worry to much about resizing the bridge windows etc - not sure if that would be enough though - certainly the fighters can fit in but would be for skilled pilots if the ship was in motion - no, more thought is required - might have to remove the bay all together and find something else interesting there that glows =)

the corvette well i always thought of it as a light corvette/patrol craft and i really didn't ever think of it as a carrier however i thought to myself that using the wraith squadron style fighters docked on the outside would increase the crafts combat effectiveness - certainly i never wanted fighters carrier internally in it - frankly i envisaged these ships being docked with the star destroyer for half the time - so yeah i'm happy with that ship just needs some detailing in places and some texture maps (that one is small enough that i might actually texture it sometime)

fracalsponge in my thread :) looking at your star destroyers always makes me feel inadequate - thats some serious modeling skill you have - think your models have been an inspiration to many people like myself who wanted to bring our own ideas to life

your right too that the destroyer could use another layer of detailing but i'm starting to reach my limits, both in skill and computer power - i'm using an all in one computer and frankly the graphics in it are lacking - combined with lightwave modeler which hasn't seen an update since about version 7 (so despite being one of the first to sign up for the hardcore program- what a disappointment that was - could have cried when they canceled core when it was just starting to show real promise too, this time i didn't upgrade and i wont until newtek finally does something about modeler) and well the poly count on this thing is really making my computer crawl - i'll be lucky to get the detail in for the bits i haven't done yet

but if you have any suggestions for how you think i could improve it without adding to much extra to the poly count please i'd welcome any advice you can give me

i really love your designs. Thanks for sharing.

Is just loading it into modeler/rendering killing your machine, or are you just having problems with frame-rate in viewport, etc.? If it's just a responsiveness issue, i'd export the hull and add the details in a separate file, then merge it back into a main file for rendering.

But if you replaced the current texture with some panel lines or a bump texture for surface detailing, you'll probably have it look better too. The main issue I have with it is that the superstructure looks very nicely detailed but the hull is really plain. The contrast is a bit odd.

BTW, is this also your thread?

no thats not my thread - while back on the newtek forums think someone asked about copying ti but cant seem to find the message - and cant remember if i said i was ok with or not - will investigate - wouldn't object to you doing a version of it since would be better than mine but thats a hatchet job =(

only other place i showed this model was here http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=115723

anyway to other matters - its weird - modeler is much happier showing the shaded viewports than the background wireframe for some reason - but i use backgrounds layers alot to line things up or model without thigns getting in the way but still able to see them - but even so tends to be a responsivness issue while moving geometry around, move the mouse 5 seconds later the geometry moves, not so easy to work that way - ironically vpr in layout renders it with GI in seconds

after rereading your last comment i kinda got what you were saying and modeled in some more panels - and i did strip down the model and use a bare bones version to speed things up - almost had a disaster when i saved it insterad of saving it as a revision lol - thankfully was enough undo's availble to save the other work i had done since previous revision

will post the some more images once i've done abit more - might see if any textures availble online though as i suck at making convincing looking panels for something of this scale

well if you look down in the newtek thread guy with same forum avatar image and also living in spokane wa - just wish i knew if i gave him permission to copy it - but its not in thread and not in private messages - so assume he mailed me but i purge my email every now and then so nothing there

ok heres a small update, not much visable since most of the changes were small things that were niggling at me but tried to add some more paneling on the first level of the dorsal hull and probably the most obvious change is a quick repeating hull texture from a tutorial on this site - but to keep people happy added a close up (well closer) of the gunnery deck so you can see abit more detail there - much closer than that though and my woeful detailing skills become apparent
