The VUE series has been updated since the link in this thread was posted. Vue 10 Pioneer is now a free download as before you can add addon packs to it making it more robust. I'm getting it now but haven't tried any of the VUE series. Just from the list of movies that have used VUE I must say I'm impressed..

VUE 10 Pioneer INFO and Download page

    Great thread BTW.

    BSurfaces ($0.00 USD)

Bsurfaces is a modeling and retopology tool which combines the use of freehand strokes, bezier curves or loose edges to generate polygonal surfaces. It can be included in a traditional polygonal and subdivision modeling workflow, speeding it up substantially. Bsurfaces is a Blender add-on, it can be used to build both open and closed shapes, extrude selections, bridge between two selections, having full control over the shape, direction, and twisting of the final surface. The output is a clean topology composed of quadrilateral faces. Triangles are also possible when building surfaces using crossing strokes. The different options can be modified interactively, allowing to see how they affect the resulting surface in real-time. (Source: bsurfaces.info)

    Algodoo

Imagine a totally unique program. A program that gives you the opportunity to play with physics - using your own hands. Apply a constructionists learning paradigm, learning by doing. Use simple drawing tools to design, construct and explore with. Sounds like an interesting idea? Algodoo is that program. (Source: www.algodoo.com)

    G3D Innovation Engine ($0.00 USD)

The G3D Innovation Engine is a commercial-grade C++ 3D engine available as Open Source (BSD License). It is used in commercial games, research papers, military simulators, and university courses. G3D supports hardware accelerated real-time rendering, off-line rendering like ray tracing, and general purpose computation on GPUs.

G3D provides a set of routines and structures so common that they are needed in almost every graphics program. It makes low-level libraries like OpenGL and sockets easier to use without limiting functionality or performance. G3D is a rock-solid, highly optimized base on which to build your 3D application. Just some updates to what others have said:

    * Audacity has already been mentioned for basic audio-editing needs. If you want something more at the A“pro audioA” level, how about Ardour.

    * Sodipodi as a drawing/design tool: Inkscape is the successor to this, which I think is getting much more active development nowadays.

    * Even more image-editing/paint tools: how about Krita and MyPaint.

    * Worth pointing out that Aqsis is a Free Software implementation of PixarA’s Renderman.

    * The ultimate tool for media encoding/transcoding/conversion has to be FFmpeg. This is a command-line tool, with an unbelievable number of knobs and levers for you to twiddle. Of course, you have to know what youA’re doing...

    * Somebody made some noise about having to A“licenseA” MP3 encoding. They didnA’t make clear that the A”licensingA” in question is a patent, not a copyright, issue. And patents are not automatically valid worldwide, so the precise patent(s) involved, if any, will depend on which country youA’re in.

Oh, and freeware is not the same as Free software. And Free software can indeed be A“commercialA”, and often is. If you want to contrast it with the non-Free stuff, the word you are looking for is A“proprietaryA”.
