Something other than Star Trek. This is from Jeff Wayne's Musical version of War of the Worlds. Rather unique. Just started on it last night actually. Here is what I have so far.

Edited to say....fixed a few things. Added legs, and almost everything. A few tentacles and all I need a Big Ben and a heat ray.

Looks interesting, though I can't quite figure out how it would walk on three legs with any sort of balance. Seems like it would always be tipping over one way or another. Must be magic blue smoke.
    .
Anyway, the orange 'headlights' don't look quite right to me, but it looks like artistic license. :)

I'm fairly sure you could take care of the balance issue using a gyroscope. Of course, it's old sci-fi, so don't take it too hard. ;-)

Your render looks good, but you seem to be having some weird mesh errors with the gun mount. Is that just a render issue, or is the mesh itself a problem?

It's the mesh. Still working on it.

    Ulla!

Good start. This clip from the stage show has a video of them walking, they're a bit odd for sure, but you just don't really care too much. I suppose they're supposed to look a little odd, being Martian and all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh1BuCcIPXQ

Would be nice if they did a full movie on DVD. I would probably watch that until my eyes bled.

Here is a composite I just finished. Still need a tentacle or two but.....

    Cool.

Are you going to do the ones from the movie? (the real movie not that tom cruise travesty)

    There's a "real" movie? Hopefully you don't mean the Asylum's mockbuster :p

I was thinking of modeling the Thunderchild. But from the descriptions, not much in the British fleet really seems capable and correct. The ship that does is American. The USS Indiana. BB-1. She mounts enough firepower to be a threat. Low to the water. Decent speed. The Thunderchild in the book briefly survived being keyholed by a heatray. A small ship wouldn't.

It may have been based on HMS Polyphemus. But that doesn't seem a well armed a Thunder Child should have been.

From the limited information Wells wrote these are these are the parameters. He did call her a torpedo ram but..... I doubt the Polyphemus would have even made a dent in a tripod.

    -Low silhouette
    -Twin stacks

Most of the of the rest is inferred. She rammed a tripod, taking it out. The Polyphemus is only 2600 tons. Hardly a large ship. I doubt she would have had the effect necessary. More over the ship briefly survived a center hit with a heat ray. Again suggesting a larger ship.

I was also thinking of making this a different battle. Maybe New York Harbor or something.

This really cries out to be turned into a steam punk game. Maybe try the people at military meshes for period weapons. Then check out Arma2 or do it in Unity.

The Polyphemus didnt have significant armnament - unlike the Thunderchild which had guns heafty enough to cut down a fighting machine.

I wonder whether Wells made a mistake in calling the Thunderchild a torpedo ram - as she sounds more like one of these (or at the very least a cross between one of these and a torpedo ram).

Incidentally - torpedo rams were very rare - the HMS Polyphemus was the only one of her kind ever put into service with the royal navy.
