Bit more today. Mostly, just cleaning up/smoothing the mesh and waiting for some horrible major inaccuracy to rear its head. There's still a seam running up the midline from mirroring the two sides, this will be smoothed out when the two completed halves are merged and subsurface smoothing is applied.
Well, you did have Seaquest in Scenes with older submarines. The Delta IV was an "Older" sub. In the pilot you had your usual "Sausage with a propeller" type subs. In the episode before the season 1 finale, they were chasing a really old sub in the opening scene. The there's Skully's diesal powered russian submarine he used to sink whalers with. Come to think of it, there werent any "Fancy" subs in the first season of Seaquest except the Sealaunches and the speeders. In season 2 is when they introduced other odd looking subs. So any sub would be great man.
I agree with Starscream, the forward "Arrow" seems to be slanted up a bit. Was that intentional? But its looking really great!!!
Oh, and also, just in case you didnt know, because its only shown in one scene in the entire series(The pilot actually, the opening scenes), the Seaquest has matching "Spotlights" on its dorsal side too.
The screencaps are from Daggers the first episode of season 2 (Like DGWilliams said), for some reason you never see the first seaquest surfaced. Even its drydock at pearl harbor was underwater (unlike its drydock at New Cape Quest in season 2). I heard people say that the first seaquest's bioskin couldnt be exposed to sunlight, but i havent seen any official sources or on screen dialogue to suggest that (Although it would explain why the drydock at pearl was under water).

It's not the forward arrowhead that's the problem, it's the aft hull, which appears to be bending upwards. The arrowhead/shovel/squid/whatever (!) seems fine as far as I can see.

I thought it was a bit odd myself until I started seeing it on a number of online sources. You can kinda make it out on Lenner1's "Brave New World" screencaps, although perspective hides it a bit. I wish I had access to better orthographic views though, because that original image I linked is seeming more and more inaccurate the more 'real' shots I see.
OK. that top down profile image I linked to in the first post must be way wrong. That aft section is bulging way too far to fit the screencaps I've seen so far:mad:. Oh well, It's going to be a case of eyeballing from all angles until it looks right. I'll be shaping the aft section's sides to a more circular cross-section as the contours/folds don't seem as sharp as on the front. Already tightened the main bulgy bit, which leaves it bit more streamlined. The fins are from the older model and are sitting as place holders until I figure how to bring the vertices at the rear of the mesh to a nice circle.
Just a thought, are the two indentations on the ventral surface of the 'head' somehow related to the reverse arrowhead cut into the dorsal just aft of the head? Hmmm, I'm probably showing my noobiness by asking that:)
YOu know, I been trying to see if there is any relation to them. So far im not coming up with any answers. I dont even know whats with the lights in that section on the ventral side. Its the only part of the whole boat that has lights except for the "Spotlights" near the launchbay. With 2 seasons at my disposal youd think i would learn something, but so far, i dont even know how many decks the seaQuest has. I do know its 1013 feet long. For some reason the arrow looks too elongated and too pointed. (I said the same thing about the model kit) But I noticed that the lens curve or perspective curve or whatever you call it in the series varied from scene to scene. So its hard to get this thing acurate unless they ever published screen caps of the orthos of the mesh itself that they used.
Found a screencap in my files from the season 1 episode: "The Devil's Window.", It's the 'Structural integrity' display on the bridge (the one that shows the stress caused by Raleigh Young's platform as the boat descends through a thermocline) that shows the Seaquest from the port and ventral sides. Compared with what I've got so far, there are some pretty major differences in the proportions width-wise, but the lengths of each section seem about right. I've rounded off and lengthened the arrowhead to match the screencap, but it's looking like I might have to do another revision of this to get the rest to match.
Ah, I loved the show, they had great models. My favorites were the Stinger, the Asian Coalition subfighter (that could also fly) and that ship that was steered by a Bridger AI.
Your model is coming along very nicely, I tried something like that myself once, but couldn't get it right.
Great thread and exceptional work! I have always been a huge seaQuest DSV fan. It's really great that she's getting the expert attention that she needs.

sure wish Bsiata would get back here...anybody else a 3d artist that wants to try?...i'm an old school model maker myself, i can do cad, but no idea how to do 3d..I have had to my disposal a great reference to do up this sub correctly
Hi guys, de-lurking after six years. If anyone still wants it, I've got the last version of the seaQuest .blend file on Google Drive: Seaquest DSV Blender file

Orthographics and a nice perspective render...
Other than that, good work!
I hope to explain, if possible
It's a stock shot used throughout season 2. It first appeared in the first season 2 episode, "Daggers."

Scrapped and rebuilt the aft section, played with textures...
