2DImperial Ships Comparison Chart

Hi To Whoever reads this thread,

I've been a member for a while and it's my 1st thread so here goes. I am completely wowed by what some artists in my opinion have brought movies like Star Wars, my favorite that blew me away when I 1st saw the Star Destroyer chasing the Pricess Leia's Frigate on the big screen as a 8 year old kid in 1978, to life with their out of this world 3D renders. In those days it took quite a long while for US movies to hit Singapore's theatres.

Very special mention goes to Fractal Sponge for his numerous highly beautiful and detailed contributions and also not forgetting another artist, Jannik Mewes, who produced excellent designs too. Just too bad I do not see anymore works from Jannik Mewes after his thread on the SSD FEROCIOUS.

So being fond of comparing ships sizes, I have compiled some of the Imperial's Canon and Non-Canon ships and am posting 2 pictures:
A) A non-completed chart
and
B) Another modified from JBJHJM's original work.

From the non-completed chart, the biggest ship evident, TARKIN-CLASS SUPER STAR DESTROYER (if I remember it correctly being named), in the picture came from an unknown source but I happened to chance it in some site then. Unfortunately, I can't find it anymore so not sure who to give credit to. Thus, if anyone or the original artist were to read this thread and come forward with the answer, I will be most happy to extend my thanks.

I am trying to add colour and texture to its frame using only Microsoft Paint as do not know how to use all those wonderful 3D softwares. Plus, I have to copy and paste bit by bit of the texture and skin from ships designed by the artist who created the modified Star Wars: Warlords from the original Homeworld game. Thus, calling me basic and unoriginal would be an understatement.

Just take this as my little effort in thanks for this fantastic site.

Thank you,

Dornrax

    wow, that's truly impressive.

Really. Impressive. By your comparison, the ship would be about a third the size of Moff Tarkins original death star. Be interesting to see how you finish it, if you will. I think you should try some other software available than MS Paint and take your time with it, I think it will work out for you. Just a thought.

Thank you all for the compliments. its encouraging to know that there are people who did notice this thread. Got the length from that unknown website, 52.5km. So measured that with Jannik Mewes measurement scale (at the top) and also measured all the other ships in accordance to their lengths and slowly copied and pasted into that picture. If Jannik's measurement scale is accurate, then what you see are the actual size comparisions.

Yup, I intend to finish it as and when I can squeeze in the time. Would like to see how it turns out too eventually. I would love to try some other software than MS Paint but really not sure which is good to use. A suggestion would be helpful. Am pretty new to all these and was just trying my hand at something in between doing my work late into the wee hours of the morning.

    Once again, thank you all.

In the 2d area, I recommend Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and/or Corel Draw. I think that is mostly what many are using in this forum. I am sure you will be able to find something, that is reasonable to you. All will take time to learn, but its worth it.

Have changed the texture in the ship's trench in comparison to the original. Plus, completed the engine and exhaust parts. Unfortunately, still have to use Microsoft Paint to do it as didn't have time to master some of the other software thoughtfully recommended by madmacs.

Plus, still looking forward to seeing a reply from the person who designed the TARKIN-CLASS SUPER STAR DESTROYER. He/she ought to see their design coming to life in 2D color.

Imagine 1 of the Empire's Pride, a 52.5 km behemoth of death and destruction advancing to an attack position accompanied by a fleet of Star Dreadnoughts, Star Destroyers and a horde of Tie variants squandrons, woe to the enemy force facing them.

I have decided to name the fleet, "THE IMPERIAL REMNANT'S 1ST GRAND FLEET ANNIHILATOR", Code Name: "IMPERIALIX ANNIHILATRIX".

Tarkin Class Super Star Destroyer by Crix Dorius, based on an original design by Daniel Haughton. Dorius' version is 52,500 meters in length, twelve rotatable superlasers. Daniel's original version had a grav-shock projector to shatter planets, as well as several embarked assault cruisers for planetary occupation.

Well... this version of the Tarkin is from me. Just for the records. :)

And nice work. I like it much. ^^

Ahh, I finally recall where I got it from. You are from Germany? Many thanks to you Crix Dorius for coming out with this great design. What happened to the TARKIN-CLASS that was once in Wolf's Shipyard? No wonder I could not find it anymore. But glad you like the texture I am putting on it. Hope its not too far from what you had in mind when you were designing it. And my apologies but due to the difficulty of texturing the top armour you originally designed with the many lines and shapes, I had to simplify it without sacrificing the original shape as much as possible.

Btw, are you the one who designed this TARKIN II-CLASS STAR DREADNOUGHT attached as well? If you are, would appreciate if you have a clearer copy for me to texture after I complete the TARKIN-CLASS project. I will name the TARKIN II-CLASS with its fleet "THE IMPERIAL REMNANT'S 2ND GRAND FLEET DECIMATOR", Code Name: "IMPERIALIX DECIMATRIX".

Since I haven't thought of coming out with an original design on my own but yet love these Imperial Capital Ships and placing them together for size comparisons with the current top of the line canon and non-canon ships, in the meantime, I would like to complete the TARKIN-CLASS & TARKIN II-CLASS designs 1st and perhaps much further into the future, I may attempt to design THE IMPERIAL REMNANT'S 3RD GRAND FLEET TRIUMVIRATE'S biggest capital ship with a thought placing it at the 60 km length region.

    Yeap... Good old Germany. ^^

I don`t know what happend with the Tarkin at Wolf's Shipyard. Some other SW designs are gone too.

Oh the texture looks fantastic. No doubt. :thumb:

No... the Tarkin II isn`t from me. Maybe basing on my version.

Thank you all for the encouraging complements so far.

Have completed most of the top armour and touched up on the angles to be as accurate as possible. Plus, added multiples of little lights to give the ship the impression of being alive with activity. Doing the bottom side gigantic super turbolasers will be slightly more difficult. In any case, will keep at it and find inspiration to make it look better and more realistic.

Unfortunatly, I realised that my original which is saved in .bitmap maintains the picture quality and color, but to be able to attach it in this site, I have to save under .jpeg which lowers the picture size but also drops the quality somewhat. Thereafter, when I attached it in this site, it drops even further.

Anyway, here's hoping this latest save will allow everyone to get a closer look at what I am referring to.

    Cheers

    Hi Crix,

Great to know someone else from Germany. I'm from the tiny island of Singapore which is only 42km wide. So if this behemoth ship were to ever hover over the country I'm staying now, those who do not look up will think its going to rain extremely heavily cos it will block out the sun.

Hope you like how your TARKIN-CLASS SUPER STAR DREADNOUGHT is progressing thus far. The Turbolaser turrets were really difficult in achieving the right kind of look so I gave up and copied a mix of Fractal's and Jannik's designs and modified them. Am far from completed in giving the top a more realistic look by adding lights with shape and depth on the structures.

Plus, have also added various smaller ships making up the fleet strength which is also far from complete. With a SUPER STAR DREADNOUGHT that size accompanied by smaller STAR DREADNOUGHTS or SUPER STAR DESTROYERS, they better have enough smaller ships that can fulfill various types of minor roles to complement the behemoths in smaller engagements that do not warrant the monsters' attention.

Even though they are a shadow of their former glory, the true might of the IMPERIAL REMNANT remains unknown as an ace card in my alternate STAR WARS universe. Just a single grand fleet like this can cause serious damage in full battle enagagements.

But being remnants of the EMPIRE and free from Palpatine's evil machinations, they have slowly rebuilt their grand fleets and fleets in the outer regions of the galaxy quietly in peace far far away from the NEW REPUBLIC's influence and attention. Waiting patiently and silently until the universe needs order from chaos. But that's another story for now.

Great Job, So far Dornrax, :thumb:

I know you wish to show comparisons of each of the ships each time you update, but now this just a suggestion, maybe you should forgo painting it all in one large BMP with all these ships and separate it into 2 separate drawings of the Tarkin Super Star Dreadnought alone, a Profile and Top view. You will be able to show more detail in your drawings and we can see your progress much better. You can also place in the scale as part of the legend about the ship, if you wish. Just a thought.

You can assemble back the fleet at a later date, hopefully against a nice background which will detail your work.

Excellent idea, madmacs! Thanks. Will try your suggestion and see how it turns out. So here goes, attaching it and hoping it turns out much clearer.

The resolution is 5170 x 1000 in this cut piece of the original. Unfortunately, still can't attach it in .bmp as the file size is 13 MB that I can see in my comp. So this is a .jpg format with an original file size of 491 KB reduced to 161.9 KB upon attachment.

Damn, I just opened the pic link in this site and its still much smaller than my original pic. The prior attachments could only achieve 38% approx. of my original pic size. Following your suggestion, it shows approx. 50% of my original size. That's an improvement which I am thankful to you, madmacs, for. Plus, can't complain as its a great site which gave me much of my inspiration to even start texturing on Crix's original design and starting on this thread.

    Cheers

Dornrax, what ship is that in the your first 3d attachment? That thing is a monster. The one that makes the Assertor look small.

    Hi stfanboy,

A little confused here as not sure if you are referring to my 3rd attachment in this thread as the comparison is against 3 ECLIPSE-CLASS STAR DREADNOUGHTS measuring 17.5 km each. I have reattached it as my next project once I finish the TARKIN-CLASS project. That's an IMPERIAL TARKIN II-CLASS SUPER STAR DREADNOUGHT. Measuring 52.5 km from bow to stern like its predecessor the TARKIN-CLASS in my alternate STAR WARS universe. Ahh, that's a beauty called the SSD FEROCIOUS measuring at 28.5 km. Please refer to this thread URL: http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?62366-SSD-Ferocious-and-escort-fleet/page40

I got the original picture from that page and modified a little + added Fractal's ASSERTOR, EXECUTOR, BELLATOR, ALLEGIENCE & IMPERATOR CLASSES as comparisons. If you want my modified version where I added Fractal's ships, it's saved in .bmp format to maintain it's quality but the file size is 24 mb. I tried to upload through this thread under "manage attachments" but can't seem to pass through. Perhaps I am not doing it right or somehow these guys know a way to upload their high res pics. :(

    No new update yet? ^^

    Hi Crix,

Sorry for the late reply. Been very busy with work + could not find inspiration to touch up the TARKIN totally. Have tried to improve the trench part with ginormous ION CANNONS. But apart from that, haven't figured out how to touch up the top yet.

In the meantime, have modified some ships from an original poster that I believe is done by the amazing Evillejedi with 3 of Fractal's designs. Without which I could not improvise on some of the ships, namely the EXECUTOR, ECLIPSE, SOVEREIGN etc...

I will showcase the originals and my touched up versions as a side by side comparison in the subsequent messages. The only ship I had to really modify greatly was the ECLIPSE II based on the ECLIPSE cos could not find any nice profile pictures on the web. So if anyone has got 1, would appreciate if they can link me to it or upload into this thread.
    Tx

    Hi publiusr,

Yup, will eventually get to that. I have been modifying on the largest ships to the smallest. So will be posting them in the order done. The best Victory-Class variants are in my opinion done by Evillejedi if I got it correctly. But as can't find them on the net anymore to confirm, will give credit to him basing on the design, skin & style.

    Cheers

LOL. Those ships have ridiculous lengths. I mean a 26km ship!? You'd need a crew in the millions to run that thing.
