Well this is weird, I've been modeling for a good while now, started off using an ancient version of cinema 4d, but moved to Maya at Uni a few years ago.

now am working in Maya at an animation studio. modeling and animating characters so this is the first space ship I've modeled for a while. Don't have much spare time any more, so this may take a while.

I've made hundreds of variations of this ship over the years but as soon as I've finished it, and been happy with it. I'll watch an episode from the show and there's always a view or something that makes me hate the model that I've made.

Luckily I've got hold of a physical scale model of her and some decent reference, so I'm having a go in a real 3d package.

Sorry for that massive bit of background, I'll put it down to nerves...

I'll be posting updates as and when i can...

Feel free to leave any comments.......but I'll warn you i love this ship, any criticisms of her or her design and I'll be round to give you a slap...

Looking good so far, where did you get a physical model of Moya from?

I'd been looking for years, and stumbled across a model shop in London last year.

    comet miniatures

Well, that's the best archetype for a good VR-model.

    Let#s get going, matey. :thumb:

You need to make Moya a little more rounder or smoother, but otherwise very good start...

Ok done a bit more, i should be doing work but I'm working on it when nobodies looking. i know theres not much to see at this stage, but cheers for the feedback.

I'm just blocking the basic shapes at the minute, so I'll get onto smoothing the hull when i start going into more detail..

It will be nice to see a very organic looking ship here! Looking forward to more updates. Are there any schematics or blueprints around online for the ship?
  • markmasseymarkmassey512 StaffordshirePosts: 586Member
I'm afraid not, I've looked everywhere. there are blueprints of talyn her offspring. but nothing of moya. I emailed the Henson company for some once, and got a swift reply saying absolutely not. i couldn't even persuade a friend of mine to send me some shots of the model when he got a job at animal logic, who did the cgi for the show..

^ I am surpised and not at the same time.
I don't think the Henson COmpany has every releast any of their concept art.
Your best bet is most likely getting a few screen shots of her from the DVD's.

Yeah don't expect anyone to casually give out such material. ;)

On the model... Are you using Maya's NURBS or polygons?
  • markmasseymarkmassey512 StaffordshirePosts: 586Member
Yea it was a long shot, i was desperate.

Im using polygons on the model.
  • AresiusAresius359 Posts: 4,171Member
Well, since Talyn is the offspring it would be logical that the blueprints of the childship can be "translated" to the parentship Moya. Got me?

They dont look that much alike.

    Talyn was a peacekeeper/lethiathan hybrid.

Not sure if it makes it any easier for you but Apple now has the first season of Farscape on iTunes for purchase...

Cheers for that, I've got all the dvds, so I'm not stuck for reference, but thanks for the thought..

and yes, apart from the same sort of design, body and two limbs. Moya and Talyn look nothing like each other.
