Hi all,

I've seen this asked a couple of times on here, and well I was thinking about it at work earlier and had something of an inspiration.

I don't have time at the moment to write up a tutorial, but I've uploaded a sample scene for those lucky enough to have LW9.2 or above.

It's not perfect, and still needs a little tweaking, but the basic groundwork is there (it took me around 15 minutes to build from scratch, and blow me if the idea I had worked first time.....

It's a mix of 1 textured volumetric Spotlight, with a Lens flare, and 1 subpatched object with a volumetric displacement map attached.

The most time consuming part is getting the volumetric light setup, everything else is a piece of proverbial.

Four second vid of the thing in action.

Video - Quicktime 7 - 510kb

Feel free to mess around and try to improve it :)

Scene File - Lightwave 9.2 Format

I would recommend you make the colour bands more "crazy" in their motion, right now it looks like your hyperspace window has 6 legs and is just floating around in space, make them chaotic and wild in movement and probably fade them so theyr'e not so sharp in definition.

    Other then that, good start.

Yeah I know it still needs work, just figured I'd try the idea out.

No time to develop it atm though :(
