PracticalUSS Yeager Kitbash (DS9)

Hey, all. I’ve started work on my own kitbash of the USS Yeager, from DS9. I’m going to be following the paint scheme of the filming model, using the colors that fellow modeler Stephen Loftus used on his own kitbash.

For my bash, I’m using an old Voyager saucer from a previous kit. I’ve stripped the original paint down to the bare plastic (using oven cleaner - spray it on, and let soak for about 10 minutes, then brush off with a toothbrush), then applied some Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, then shot the base coat of Testors Flat Gull Gray. I’ve now masked off the parts of the saucer to be painted light blue, in this case, Testors Russian Underside Blue.

I realize most of the saucer windows have been previously installed. I have black and white ultra-fine-tip Sharpie paint pens for the windows, and I am confident I can redo them cleanly, once all the painting is done. This will be a LONG-term project, as I am absolutely determined to do this right, so don’t expect daily or sometimes even weekly updates. But they will come.

Sweet. Nothing is quite as cool as a good kitbash.

Looks like a high quality model. Looks like you got a new monitor too.

A very good luck to you on this endeavor.

Looks like some top notch painting. :)

I like the heavy handed blue on this ship. I know why they did it. (detail for a "distance" ship) but I still think it looks cool.

Thank you. This is actually my first time doing masking with curvy areas and using an airbrush, so I’m really pleased with how it turned out. I just wanted it to come out clean, with crisp edges, lol. I just didn’t want it to look like the filming model, where they literally just slathered the paint on, lol.

I also very much love the colors on this ship. I love colorful Trek ships, like the Ambassador-Class. I’m glad they gave this one a lot of color.

Maybe a properly scaled Refit saucer to go on the Voyager secondary hull?

Masking phasers is tedious. That is all.

Sounds time consuming, but it's time well spent. They look great.

Looks great. I did an Ambassador class back in the day where I painted all of the windows with toothpicks. It's some tedious work.

Welp, I’m going to redo all the phaser banks... every time I tried to correct some paint bleed, I ended up making things worse, so I’m going to start over, remask and repaint, this time with an airbrush, and not a rattle can. Hopefully the result will be cleaner.

Thank you. Yeah, I may do some of the windows on this with a toothpick as well. I can only imagine how tedious it’d be on the 1701-D, lol.

Small update - got the aft of the bridge painted hull color. As I said last night, I’m redoing the phaser banks, so those are again hull color now. I think while I await the arrival of the phaser color, I’ll start work on the lifeboats.

Your paint work on this has been incredible so far. I'm sure the one on the show was painted as sloppily as it was to get it done quickly, but your work shows what's possible when someone takes the time to do it right. Of course, it helps that you're not on a TV show schedule. ;)

Started on the Maquis hull. Unfortunately, I’m having to brush paint this section, because I’m simply not yet skilled enough to effectively mask off all the various angles and raised sections of this area, so I simply just haven’t developed my masking skills to that point yet. Any areas of brush spillover, I’ll go over with a toothpick to touch up.

Looks good to me. I've always painted models with brushes. I've never used spray pain and never owned an airbrush.

It's very satisfying to see this getting painted! Those brown areas on the raider hull look like a pain to do.
