Great work! I kinda like that Discovery lol.

I like your version of Discovery much better than what is on the show. It's got more style to it and doesn't have the weird open areas in the saucer. (no, those gaps wouldn't be necessary to have the outer part of the saucer spin) All of the other ships are looking good too.

Love how these all look, though the Shepard's "light rows" intersecting the name and registry on top of the saucer still looks odd to me. It's there on the original obviously, it's just something of the new ships aesthetic I'm not too fond of.

On the original design, the lights are higher up the saucer and the registry is lower, so the name actually fits in the cutout. Personally, I think that looks a bit better. Though, I don't even know the point of the lights on the original. It's not like they light up much more than the hull directly in front of them.

Glad the Discovery is well received.

I think the reason is when I originally did the model it was missing detail there before I did the registry. I was only when I put the decals that I realized it was in the way. I tried moving up the registry a little and it looks a bit better:

Also instead of having lights there, I was going to put some sensor equipment or something.

On another note I guess I can swallow my words since I started on some more stuff. First my Seeker design from earlier in this thread:
    FjhJrrY.jpg
And also the Enterprise J. For this one I'm trying to give it a sort of Origami look. Overall I want it to be otherworldly. A rough idea:

    Nice.
I never been a fan of the Enterprise J. I have always seen this as one possiable version the Enterprise J could be. This is due to the whole Temporal Time War seen in Enterprise. So until we get an official J or post J in a film or TV show where it is the main ship, it will always be one possibility for me.

Looking great. I still love the Seeker. The Enterprise J was always an interesting idea. If I remember correctly from Doug Drexler's old blog, it was supposed to be a universe explorer, rather than a galaxy explorer. I think it could carry generations of families and even starships the size of the Galaxy class. Essentially, it was a mobile starbase. I think that's why the design is so radical.

@evil_genius_180 yeah that was Doug's Idea behind it.
From that point of view I like it, but we only seen it action in that one battle from ENT.

Yeah, it was an underdeveloped idea. Since we never went farther in canon Star Trek than the Enterprise-E, we never got to see much more than that brief glimpse at it.

The Enterprise J appeared in the Enterprise series?

Yep! It got a brief shot in this scene.

Ohh, I like that concept for the J!
I have the same thoughts on the Enterprise appearance as @Freak mentioned, it's just a possible version. It was clearly just a background design not given much time to be develop. I much prefer the origami lines you've got going here.

I barely remember that. I need to watch Enterprise again.

^^Doug was on the Trekyards channel a while back talking about it. He had some interesting ideas. I'm actually tempted to uber size it, so it really becomes a mobile space station meant to travel between galaxies. We'll see...

Had an idea for an escort:

    gjeTbyn.jpg

I also slapped some grid lines procedural textures on the Disco for reasons. I might as well get working on a fully detailed model of it at the rate I keep iterating:

I love what you're doing with Disco, removing the negative space from the saucer and moving the impulse engine did wonders to the design.

The escort's cute, reminds me somewhat of the Juno-Class. I'm eager to see where you take it.

That Discovery is just so much better than the thing from TV.

Nice, it is so much cooler than the shows Discovery.

How did you do the panels? You wrote procedural, did you use a pre made texture or is it all node based?
  • BrandenbergBrandenberg1655 CaliforniaPosts: 1,937Member
I'm definitely going to draw your ship someday.

I know this is sort of a late response. I usually wait to respond to comments until I have real updates so as not to push other threads down.

It's true. I remember the first version that had the engines in the original place, and it looked off. And I've never seen that class, it's cool looking!

Thanks! I used nodes to create the panels, which were then mapped onto planes to match the shape of the ship, and then rendered out. This is what came out. I just adjusted the levels/contrast for the spec map.

Would you mind sharing your node setup? I've been really interested in doing something like that but haven't figured out where to start.

I love this design.. The model looks great... i agree, i prefer this to the actual discovery... i'm not trying to kick the hornets nest by saying that.. but i think keeping it at least in the style of tos era doesn't harm the design. whilst keeping it fresh.. not to mention you've actually lit yours..

    great work...

I prefer this to the actual show Discovery too, and I think I figured out why: it's because it doesn't feel arbitrary for the sake of it, like the Disco ships do. It feels more as if it started with the traditional Starfleet shape and design language, but they had to keep adapting it for all the new technology: we have to add more pylons for this spore drive, we need to cut some holes here, etc.
  • BrandenbergBrandenberg1655 CaliforniaPosts: 1,937Member
Yes, way better than the show Discovery. I really want to see orthos like Admiral Horton mentioned.

    I´m with you.
And that spin saucer... What the hell? I´m sure they would have choosen other way for the spore drive to work.
  • BlueNeumannBlueNeumann615 Posts: 1,275Member
I could imagine there being a centrifuge type thing going on for the spore drive, like a particle accelerator or something. Design it so it's not totally connected to the ship so it can be ejected... I'm sure the spinning is mostly for the benefit of the audience to understand what's happening.

^^Yeah, I actually laughed when I saw the spinning saucer lol.

That was the idea. For my version I think it would be an experimental transwarp ship. I'm my mind transwarp is just a better kind of warp, with slightly different physics that make it significantly faster. Even if the experiments with it fail, Starfleet wouldn't abandon something just because it doesn't work the first time.(hence my issue with never hearing of the spore drive again). They would be all to keen to revisit older experimental tech with promise, since something that was dangerous or impossible in a past century might not be in current century. That said, a concept like the spore drive would work much better if Discovery was set after all the previous shows.

Well, here are orthos of the concept version for now until I get to the real deal:

I just used this. I'll probably do it manually for the final versions, since I want complete control over where each panel goes.

Finally, I got some more modeling done on the Saladin. I might redo the whole saucer though, since I have a better idea for doing the grids.
