It's a US Military thing. The stars are always forward, to signify how the flag looks when it's on a flagpole and you're running with it. If you've ever seen a US soldier in uniform with the flag on their right sleeve, it's done the same way. US Military planes have that too.
So, that's actually an accurate detail as far as the movie prop goes.

In the German Democratic Republic there was a rule for broadcasters to never show the coats of police officers (the Volkspolizei) flowing. So they couldn‘t run after suspects or stand in windy places if you did a cop TV show 😁
