3DNew TMP Enterprise Model

Warp Propulsion LaboratoryWarp Propulsion Laboratory913 BrooklynPosts: 322Member
Hello everyone,

Here is my model of the Enterprise from Star Trek the Motion Picture. It was built with 3ds Max and rendered with Corona Renderer. These are pics of the completed model, and I will post some "behind the scenes" pics as a sort of "reverse WIP thread". Please let me know what you think. Thanks for looking!

Very nice looking renders! I love how the windows look, how'd you tackle those on the model?

Thank you. Recreating the studio miniature materials was a real challenge, but also the most satisfying part of the project.

I created "window boxes" to create some depth to the interiors behind the windows. They have really simplistic textures. The "hero" interiors such as the VIP lounge, the Rec Deck, and the Botanical Garden are more detailed and articulated. I'll show those in a future post. Here is a render of the window boxes:

Hey Starship! How've you been? And thanks! :)

    Recreation Deck:

    b54di91b43j8.jpg

Anyone who's tried to model scale interiors for this ship has come to the grim realization that the space between the windows on the saucer rim is too narrow to realistically house two decks with the windows at head-height.

    d8f1kw5y77l4.jpg

This shows two 6 foot tall human(oid)s and there's no way the recreation deck can be as large as they show in the movies. In order to fit that set piece as depicted in the film into this model I'd either have to make the whole ship larger or the saucer edge taller. Neither of those two solutions appeal to me, and I'd feel silly scale modeling furniture and fixtures for this room that wouldn't work anywhere else on the ship, so I merely "suggested" the interior detail. I only want it to look convincing in exterior renders after all.

That looks fantastic. Indeed, both this ship and the TOS one suffer from slight saucer thickness issues. I like how you dealt with it.

Thanks! I may flesh it out a bit more in the future; maybe I'll make the shufflelightboard game to add some detail to the floor.

    Impulse Coils.

I decided to light the impulse engines by building a tube with an illuminated material to simulate the cfl lights they used in the filming miniature. This allows me to easily change the color and light level. Also I'm hoping it will give it a subtle perspective shift when I create animations.

Thanks! :) I don't like that the miniature's impulse engines are apparently broken, but at least it gives an insight as to how they were lit.

    Botanical Garden

Here are a couple renders of the botanical garden in the secondary hull. There's a gravel walkway surrounding some grassy, hilly areas, and a snack bar on the aft side. Yes, this interior is to scale. I used a fancy architectural vegetation pack for the plants. Though they are quite heavy, I feel the results are worth it. I tried to optimize them as best I could, but beyond a certain threshold they began to look crappy. Fun fact: This model is 5,885,340 tris with vegetation and 2,219,300 without. Oh well...

And now it's time for everyone's favorite:

    Easter Eggs!

As Adam Savage once put it, "You need to throw in little jokes while building your model in order to maintain your sanity"...or something like that.

    A nod to TNG

    wyd391vlp9uc.jpg
Look who's in charge of Phaser Control!
This is also a nod to the original model, which does indeed feature a picture of Mickey Mouse in the interior somewhere.

    oqmycmthhta6.jpg
I thought it would be apropos to put a picture of the original model builders in Main Engineering.

In jokes are always fun. They're there and you know they are, but they're not visible in most circumstances. Plus, that photo with the actual modeling team is a nice callback to the ship's builders. The team at Magicam did an awesome job on the model, which has stood the test of time and they deserve to be recognized like that.

It's easy to forget what a group effort it was to create such a great design. Human nature likes to put only one or two names behind great accomplishments.
