3DAkira Class

After my adventures in this thread, I seem to have fallen in to re-modelling the Akira class from scratch. This is my first 'large' model in Blender so I'm learning a lot as I go but happy with the progress so far. Getting the shape of the catamarans right is by far the trickest part but I think they're about as close as I'm going to get.

Given how low poly the production mesh was I'm allowing myself a little bit of creative licence with some of the details, approaching at as I would were it a 'hero' ship in some cases.

Obviously the nacelles to do, and I'll redo that weapons pod too, that's all gone a bit awry.

Lewis.

Nice work so far, that looks like a really solid start. Building your own mesh is really the best way to go. :)

Thanks, yeah I can get a far more accurate mesh this way. The mesh I was using is fine but it's pretty far away from being accurate, or particularly detailed.

Refined the deflector area quite a bit and finished the shaping:

Plus, there's the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself. :)

    It's looking great.

Looks like your off to a great start.
Yeah the catamarans are a right B**** to model, I lost count how many time I redid it when I built mine.
But say that I have learnt a lot more since I built her so I might have to give it another go.
But there are other projects I want to do first.

Yeah I keep going back to them and tweaking them ever so slightly, I've tidied up that weird kink at the back there now. Started on the nacelles today, those too are a very odd shape!

That's a nice tidy looking mesh structure. :)

How about doing another version and giving it NX01 style nacelles too?

Nice work! My wireframes rarely seem to look that clean.

Mine neither in all honestly, I'm working very slowly with this one to make a real effort to keep it clean.

The results certainly appear to be worth it.

First panels done on the top of the saucer, also started the front shuttle bay. The doors on the production model are too small so I made them an suitable size to actually get shuttles in/out.

    Look good.
Personal I made them a little bigger so Runabout could fit though.

Here's a block of Runabout dimensions, there's no way I'm getting that in (I'm aware she said that). I'd have to make the saucer significantly thicker and that'd start throwing everything off. Runabouts will have to go in the aft bay doors.

More panelling, and details. Getting the smaller stuff in is helping to give it scale though.

It's looking great. Windows and hatches will really give it a sense of scale. :)

    Great progress!

Makes sense to have the runabouts only enter one way, similar to how on the Galaxy they only fit on the main shuttlebay (and barely at that).

Yeah the windows will seal the deal. I'm mulling over what to do about the windows tbh, on the production mesh, as scaled, the windows on the saucer are huge, like, 5.5-6 meters tall, and it makes the ship look smaller than it is. I would assume they're supposed to be the same size as the windows we see in quarters on the galaxy class so I may re-scale for that.

The studio CGI model was textured using photos of the Enterprise-E, that's probably why the windows look off. Since you're doing your own version with some tweaks to some things, you might as well do the windows the way you want them.

That's the Steamrunner. The Akira was meant to be the only one of the First Contact fleet ships to be seen upclose, and thus it was the only one with a unique texture set, designed from scratch by Jeager.

The other three ships designed for the FC fleet had their textures based on photographs of models, though modified. The Steamrunner from the Ent-E, the Saber from the Ent-D, and the Norway from the Defiant.

Rough nacelle glow mats, and some beginings of the shuttle bay control room, I feel like that bit will need a lot of detail to help the scale.
