3DOrbital Cannon

I just started designing a new spaceship for a video game im making. Its a orbital cannon that's supposed to shoot giant lasers at a planetary surface from orbit. I would like to get some feedback on the design and new ideas. Its easier to make changes from the beginning.

I bought some other ships from the Unity asset store that will be in the same fleet as this one. So I am trying to match the aesthetic.

I've added solar panels to the model. Do you think it looks better with or without them? I wanted to have a cutscene in the game where you see the ship deploying or "unfolding" itself in some way. I thought maybe it could start with the solar panels folded up and then it unfolds when getting ready to fire.

One concern I had is the ship looks too bulky and sci fi'ish to have solar panels on it, since solar panels are related to real spaceships and satalites. It feels like it should appear more fragile or have more of a satellite appearance.

I actually think it looks good , however looks too much like B5's. Not saying that's bad but in space kenetics works different, but I like what I see so far.:thumb:

I think he is referring to Babylon 5 Station, (itself)..

Honestly, it looks little more like B4....but either way, it looks great.

Maybe not solar panels, but cooling vanes.

The Babylon 5, 4th season the EARTH defense Cannon in obit around the planet!
As I said it looks very similar to them.

I've added in some more ideas, like more solar panels, support beam structure, longer barrel, and ropes/wires.

I want to give the impression of a doomsday weapon, but doesn't have any armor or other weapons to defend itself. It will have to be escorted by a fleet.

I am wondering, what ru using for a temp lighting / current lighting.?

Im using blenders ambient light lighting, with no directional light.

Wow....you did this on blender?...Damn, i tried blender and it drove me crazy...I gave up on that one. You are more talented then mean that program.

Blender is quite hard to get used to, but for me personally, I can do work faster in it than I can in 3ds max.

I am the opposite...I guess everyone had their strengths.

I had a few day's stint on Blender. I progressed quite quickly thanks to some great YouTube tuts, but there were some basics that don't match how 3DS works and even using the "Set it up like Max" it didn't seem to enable me to do some of the basics. What I am probably going to end up doing is building models in 3DS then port them into Blender to do nice renders much quicker. :D

I like this orbital cannon, I would change a couple of things (I'm no better at modelling than you, but you wanted suggestions!!) - namely making the scaffold more shaped. Square looks out of place. You could go full circular, but something like a Hexagon cross section or Octagon would give it a 'more detail' feel without blowing your brains out calculating angles. :)

I would also work on shrinking the gun, or making it multi barrelled or something. The BFG-Barrel design makes me think the whole construct is just the weapon and a barrel suggests projectile, which makes me think recoil of epic proportions. If It's building some sort of laser, you could consider replacing the barrel with a large 'lens'.

The extra detailing on the fins is nice, but be sure to consider how all the extra rigging and cables are going to move when you animate and fold this up. With Gravity and Friction both being not so much of an issue in high orbit, they might not need a -tremendous- amount of support and stabilisation. Perhaps just bulk up the connection hinges? :)
