Today, I'm moving towards a more "new in the box" look for my Botany Bay. I'm toning down some of the reds, and trying to improve materials. This is in many ways a Botany Bay we never saw, because she was already pretty old and banged up when we saw her in "Space Seed".
I know. It's a shock to me, too. We've never seen her clean and unmolested before. Am I being too precious with the red tones? Should I take more of the saturation out? Should I take more of the reflectivity out?
Modelling wise, no. Design wise? All of it, never cared for the DY ships.
Actually, it looks like you may not have turned smooth shading on on the big wind panel thing. Look on the last image and the corner of that big brown piece looks like it needs smoothing or more edges in there. Can't see anything else sticking out apart from that.

Oh the nose. That is still proving to be a challenge. I have found a solution for it, but it jacks with my other geometry. I think I will just move it to a new layer, make it there , and copy it back when I am done.
Yes, I know the Olympics are over, so I have no excuse not to post new progress, but this sharpened pencil effect is proving vexing - you know, like Harley Quinn? Yeah, I know, it's too early for Suicide Squad jokes, but it's frustrating. I did find a good tutorial for making the pencil effect, but only with a straight, non-curved cone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NgMlruLsc8
The problem with this method is I can't add loop cuts to curve it, either before doing the boolean operation or afterward. Nor does proportional editing seem to work.
So, yeah, still hitting my head against the wall on this one, because it looked like it should work, but nah.

The next shot I've changed the angle so you can see all the hard work I've done on the details on the aft structures.

The pencil bits at the fore end should be the last of the modeling. Then I'll move on to materials.
Wow! What a difference materials make!

This first shot is of her left back quarter. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Irishman/media/Botany%20Bay6.png.html
This second shot is further away, to show the overall changes I've made.

Thoughts?
Yeah, I forgot about it. :shiner:
Quite a rabbit hole, and I don't know when I'll surface. When I do, I'll let you guys know!

What do you think??
Ah, good. I was starting to feel like I was shouting into the void there.
Anything you would suggest changing at this point?

That rounded corner on the panel in the foreground.
Not tonight though. Watching the Olympics.

Aaaahhh, now I see it.
