Good stuff Chris, thanks for sharing! Part of my layout looks like what you've done here but I had to split it along the "equator' as well as around the step around the "droid strip", the "droid strip" walls, the "torpedo tubes", the area around the "butt plate", and a couple of other places in order to eliminate as much stretching as I could without putting too many seams in places that would be a problem. I'll try to post it when I get a chance.
ahh yes, I was thinking about cutting along the aquator too. Then I was thinking about what you will see mostly ... it is side and top mostly so that was the reason I did it this way.
Subject to change and still very much a WIP but this is where the uvs are right now. Like I said, I couldn't get rid of the stretching with any fewer cuts:
Interface is crap, but it's super easy and super fast.
Heh, have just purchased that funnily enough, and am now waiting on the dongle for the thing in the mail. Worth getting, makes UV unwrapping much easier and faster. Am currently unwrapping a high poly detail blaster rifle using standard 3DS Max UV tools and it is a right headache.
If I get it, it's going to have to be a Hobbyist license. It's a basically unrestricted license, though it's only a single user license, which is fine with me. Though, I can't even afford that right now.
I went with the pro in the end because there was one key feature in that which was missing from the hobbyist version, can't recall what it was off the top of my head, but it was important, otherwise I'd have gone with the hobbyist version too.
There are a few handy features missing from the hobbyist versions including the auto-unwrap functionality and the ability to automatically find and duplicate uvs across repeated objects (ie. identical tank treads), etc. That said, fundamentally there isn't anything that you can't do in the hobbyist versions, it just might take longer.
I have it, I use it. I don't always like the way it lays out the pieces on the map. It puts them on at angles, which can make it a pill to line up stuff like stripes with the geometry. Also, it returns a lot of errors, but I may not be using it right when that happens.
It's not meant to be any one particular X-Wing at the moment - it's kinda generic, and steals inspiration from all of them. That said, it's set up in such a way where making the specific variants wouldn't be difficult.

That's really looking great. :thumb:

That might be of some use.

Position, thickness, and depth are all subject to change.

Some VERY early work on the fuselage:

More to come!
That's what happens when you don't use a good primer.
Thanks all!

I also still need to add the styrene chips, the scorching around the torpedo tubes, etc., etc.
Seriously, it's looking spiffy.
Thank you!
That'll buff right out.
