Got a couple new things today. I've been working on a 3D model of the Discovery, from 2001 for a couple of weeks. I got everything printed out over the weekend, and assembled last night.
This thing came out bigger than I had expected... it's about 30 inches long! It took about 14 hours total print time.
Also, I'm making Christmas ornaments for the upcoming con in Pensacola where I'll have a spot:
I'll take some better pictures tonight... I took these with my phone late last night.
Nice. I love the Discovery, even if it does look like a baby rattle. The ornaments are really cool. That's a neat idea, having a three sided TNG emblem. That way, they look great from almost any angle.
It's been a busy couple of weeks. We attended the Pensacola Pop Expo, which was a small lead up to Pensacola Comic Con, in March. I've never done anything like that before, but it was a lot of fun! I got to talk to a lot of new people, and got to show off a little bit.
I've got a lot more photos on my new Facebook page, and I have new pics of everything on the website too. I borrowed a DSLR camera and got some decent lights set up, so they look a lot better:
Also, I got a couple of orders for models of the Prime Alternative Enterprise. Since I was going to be printing more, I decided to go ahead and update the model with grid lines, and do a few things to make assembly easier.
I finally finished my Enterprise model, which I think turned out really well.
Also, my latest Sonic Screwdriver, built for a customer in England.
I'm building a bunch of demo stuff for Pensacola Comic Con, and since I kept getting asked last time why I didn't have Star Wars stuff, I made some Star Wars stuff.
And finally, my newest model, an Armstrong class from STXI and STID. I'll start printing it out tonight.
Hey, did you see where there's a company that's 3D printing cars now? Real, life sized electric cars. They were a hit at the Detroit Auto Show. They're made of carbon fiber and I think about 95% of the car is 3D printed, only certain components have to be built using traditional means. Currently, it takes something like 48 hours to print a car, they want to get it down to 12 hours. Also, they have a top speed of 40 MPH, so they're only good for city driving, but they're working on that too. Anyway, I thought you might find that interesting, if you hadn't already heard about it.
Yeah, I did see that on TV, it was pretty cool. They actually released a version of the 3D file for anyone to print out a scale version of it. I downloaded it, but didn't print it out yet.

Great stuff! Did you ever consider using a printing service like shapeways? Is it any cheaper to go with your own printer? Curious
Oh, and very jealous
Thanks.
Yep, I looked a Shapeways a while back, and it just seemed to expensive. The models I wanted to make were going to be in the 30-50 dollar range, which I felt was a lot. I got this printer for about $1000, and I've bought about 5 rolls of filament for it. I've printed about 25 models so far, and had the chance to experiment and try different things, so it really comes out about the same.
There are places where you can have stuff 3D printed. Prices vary by what materials they use. Or, if you have the technical knowledge, you can build a printer. There are sites that show you how to build them. Both of those options are cheaper than buying one.

Or you could have some guy print them for you.

Nah, I'm more of a do it myself kinda guy. A lot more fun that way.
Your right to an opinion does not make your opinion valid.
Putting together a new Prime Enterprise, since I sold the other one.
And I had a busy day yesterday; I got Enterprise primed and painted, finally glued Reliant together and painted, and painted my X-Wing and TIE fighter. The lumpy things are asteroids, that will be the bases for them.
All of these things are going to be with me at Pensacon in a few weeks.
Also in the picture is the finished Armstrong class kit, which I'll be mailing out soon. Not sure when I'll get one of those put together.
I started modeling the top part of the saucer tonight, and made pretty good progress. I'm having to simplify the model some, so that it will print well.
I quite like the Chariot class, I think for a Trek Federation ship it is very unique, not much like it out there, and yet still a distinctly TNG Federation styled design. Looking forward to seeing your model of it.

It's an Atolm design, if I remember correctly. I don't remember if he still posts here or not. Anyway, he's famous for doing his own thing, yet making stuff that, while it's really different, still looks Trek.

Yep, it's Atolm's design, for sure. I did a model for him recently, and he gave me clearance to build models out of any of his drawings, so there will definitely be more of his designs coming out of the printer.
He certainly has done some amazing stuff. I love the Chariot class. I have not seen a post from him anywhere in a long time. That Tie / X-Wing display is pretty awesome.
BTW - I broke down one of my meshes into a kit (wanted something bigger than 2 inches ) and did everything I could to reduce material for cost purposes. Yikes. Will just settle for screen savers

I didn't realize they did that. That's cool.

^^What he said.
Great job Madman!
Thanks.

Got some more stuff done... I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable about Pensacon now.
Finished my X-Wing:
You don't see these two together very often. I finished my display Prime Enterprise tonight too:
And last, a simple T800 head that I downloaded from Thingiverse.com:
More later.

That X-Wing is sweet. I like the Terminator head too.
Got the top of the saucer done, and ready to print tonight:
Going pretty good, I think.

Anyway, very cool diorama.
Not a class for the timid, that's for sure.

Hey, don't give up on it yet. Maybe I can help, if you don't mind letting me see the model.
