Thanks REL777. I'll get that in.

I've finished fixing major things and added some detail. If you compare this to previous pictures, relative sizes of things have changed. There is also more neck and bridge detail. :D

Edit: Removed old images to allow for others.

    Is that the dinky toy?

No, that's the AMT model. It actually had vents closer together on the impulse block, and some vents on the shoulder. The re-release has vents in front of the impulse block that are wider as per the original, and detail has been left off. The Graph unit/warp nacelles are better detailed however. For the best model, get an original and a re-release. Have the new graph units on the old D-7 Original model and vice versa. Old nacelles on the re-release could be thought of as a cast off Romulan version.

Now, this last one was small--but I SWEAR I remember a larger disk firing Dinky advert for a TMP enterprise with flat nacelles. I can't seem to track that down though

Satisfied with shape of the main hull. Now to start detailing it. The photo in my previous post (above) has been replaced with an update.

Heh, that's a blast from the past. In fact as soon as I posted that I realised it wasn't because the bridge area was replaced with the shaft to load those disc missiles into. Still was a really good representation of that craft for a dinky toy, especially for that era, certainly better than the TOS Enterprise toy. I don't remember a disc firing TMP Enterprise myself, but maybe we didn't get it over here in the U.K.?

Really loving how this model is coming along, the bridge detailing and main hull look spot on, also interesting to hear that the rear boxy section is a shuttlebay, never realised that. This Klingon Battlecruiser is easily one of my fave Star Trek ship designs so it is great to see it getting so much love on these forums, a great cg and physical model all at once? Is it Christmas already?

    :p

Thanks you two. I feel the same about this basic design. Matt Jeffries was having a good day when he came up with it. And yeah, she's gonna get a lot of love. I'll have to post the comparison to the near ortho shot from above. I really worked to get it close. Looks like I am going to do an idealized hybrid ship between the motion picture cruiser and the Kronos. Hey there are some greebles you like and some you don't. However I'll come back and try to create something pure for each of the models (again, probably minus the brass etched pieces that would be close to impossible).

    Qua'pla

It's interesting that the Klingons belieed in an extra set of nacelles like the Dominion.

I have been fiddling with how to score in the "Aztec" pattern on the hull, but haven't solved it yet. Got burnt out. So I did some work on the back. There are also a lot of other fixes that are subtle. Decided to post this for the city of Vancouver.

In other posts on this forum I have seen some nice engine work with a honeycomb pattern behind the engine glow. I decided to do a honeycomb pattern for the impulse engines but haven't stumbled on how to make it look right. Part of it may be that the pattern is too small. I apologize for the awful color.

Oh and BTW 89,184 polys and counting.

the angle makes the left engine wing look odd. How are you going to tackle the neck cannon/grapple hook thingies?

Agreed. It's just the camera angle though. (I hope)

I may have already (unless they are on the bottom) but I am not entirely sure what you mean. Do you have an example image?

Indeed it is, lived there for a year on a visa and loved it.

I believe it can give you some inspiration:

Demon Renegade Studios - Klingon Textures

    ModDB - Klingon Hull

    Hope that helps. ;)

Spent a considerable amount of time doing the 3-pronged greeble on the top of the hull. You ask, was it difficult? As Kramer says to Seinfeld, "You have... NO idea Jerry!" :)

Thanks Starship for those links. The information will be used. Slightly off topic, I was gratified to see two different places using good old "Paint Shop Pro." However, part of my problem is the part where I use geometric shapes to cut lines into the surface so that they can be beveled in. Tried it once, and got some weird outcome. There's always a way...

Enjoy the new pics. I updated the image in my previous post to include the top Greeble work.

Is the cut or should I say hole into the hull surrounding all those greebles (Rear_Detail.png)final?
Or place holder? A bit of segmentation going on there.

    I'm so ashamed.

Fixed above - thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't even paying attention.

Now those are the type of renders I wanna see.......show casing all the details up close and in the full glory

I realized this may be the grappler thingy. At first I posted early work. Below is a more complete effort. Enjoy.

    YouA’re welcome. ;)
About the plates and other things that youA’ll be putting over the wings, for example, isnA’t mandatory to cut the lines for later to extrude and bevel. You can use these free plugins :)
    http://www.itoosoft.com/downloads.php
    http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/scripted-glue
    http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/move-to-surface
    http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/gridscatter
Use them, convert to edit mesh and attach to the main geometry, if desired. Since the products will be independent geometry, it will simplify your texture work too. For the last, you wonA’t need to include the plugins when (if) sharing the mesh. ;)

Thanks man. However, I need to find the Lightwave version of those unless they work with LW.

My mistake! For a moment I forgot youA’re a lw user. :runs:

Got them. Thanks! A few of the pics I had already but there are at least two that will be invaluable. I'm working on the grappler right now. The overhead shot of the area will help me get the neck scaling right. Cool!

As you may know there are three different belly details...which one are you planning? I am partial to the Empire symbol/hatch version myself. AND......2 or 3 different front details [Main fuselage-back of neck facing forward] I like the one with all the gadgets...would go great with your engine details

    so........

    What say you?

I guess I could say I was aware of two, but not three. You're talking about the round piece at the back of the bottom of the hull. One has the Klingon Empire symbol and another has a lot of Greebles? I haven't decided yet. A lot of the detail involves the etched parts. I'm leaving that off. I'm trying to make the ship look clean and functional, with enough detail to provide scale and interest. Right now I am struggling with the back. The Quonos has too much on the back and the other possibly not enough. I am still trying to figure out how to make that ribbed thing that has horizontal and vertical ribs in it.

I had not noticed the different options for under the base of the neck. I do know I see a lot of details on the large, curved, front face of the main hull. Not sure I can see them well enough on the Motion Picture model to even model them.

Now you have me curious to take a look.

I got a few close ups...I just sent them
  • BrandenbergBrandenberg1655 CaliforniaPosts: 1,937Member
Better Grappler Greeble above - post 111. Since there is a limit to posting images, I replaced the early work with an update. Also notice the pipes along the side of the neck. I created the curved transition to the pipe run at the higher level of the neck (viewable at the bottom of the pic).

Nice movie version. Here's what I found for TV series plans.
