I certainly think that we need to think a bit bigger if we're to get anywhere 'out there'. The privatization of space may or may not be a good direction, but it's clearly led to the first progress in manned spaceflight in decades. Sure, it wouldn't be THE Enterprise without warp drive, shields and artificial gravity, but some would argue we wouldn't have HAD a space race without science fiction.

I find it a little sad that I couldn't name one person I know who ever wanted to be an astronaut. Certainly not with the space program as it has been.

Hmm, interesting idea for a show that someone might enjoy... a fauxumentary about building the next-generation space program. Assume some reasonable advancements that look likely in the near future, such as quantum FTL communication, but not unobtanium like artificial gravity.
