you might wonder why one pic is titled 'bank' - well, I figure that in a casino type setting....for those species that havew a currency.....there needs to be someplace on site that can depost winnings, lend money, exchange credits, arrange lines of credit for 'big spenders', cash in chips and winnings, and all manner of stuff like that

Another question.....This time using Kerkythea - I am creating a stellar cartography suite and I have a space/ starfield texture/material that I am using. I know how to make it transparent in sketchup.....so you can see into the stellar cartography room and see people looking at the stars......but when I render in Kerkythea - the starfield is rendered solid and opaque - so you can't see through it.....HOW do I edit the material in Kerky so it renders as transparent as it does in sketchup?

IN Kerky on the left hand side where it lists the materials used, right click on the materiel and choose "edit material", then play with the transparency settings till you get something you like.

well, after a Long absence....And rebuilding what was in essence a torn life.....due to a huge identity theft scam that nearly took me down and out.....I am finally in the process if getting back to my designing. All that is in the way is getting my apartment situation right and getting a proper computer for artwork. Than work begins anew....in EARNEST.

Taking a cue from Xfozzboute's wonderful work with recreating the ships of the Starfleet Museum as well as the riginal work created by Masao...I am attempting to recreate my rendition of Amarillo Class cruiser. I am not going to stay true to the original work, but rather, going to add my own 'spin' to it......tweak it a little bit. here is the starting of the design.

Update.....Calling the basic build done.......changed things around a bit.......placed the shuttle bay on top the sphere, placed the impulse engines aft of the nacelles, added a third gun emplacement tothe sphere and will have three missle launchers. Extended the length of the nacelles a bit too.

I always liked those designs. Looking good :)

Well, I didn't really like how the top mounted shuttlebay was looking, so, in trying to fix it....I made a few small goofs which resulted in me just scrapping the whole thing and doing a rebuild. Which in this case, isn't a bad thing. I am likeing the drection I am taking it now. When it comes to painting and texturing......I will probably stay fairly close to the color scheme of the Amarillo in the museum......

Almost complete......with the build stage and primary coloring......Now, HELP.....How do you do hull grid lines with Sketchup? That still show up when you don't have edge lines showing?

I went online to the 3D warehouse and found another model of the Amarillo. I downloaded it to show the differences between the version for the museum and my rendition of it. Now, to re-iterate, I would really like to know how to create hull grid lines in sketchup.

The model in the foregound is the one I downloaded and the background model is the one I am working on.

While waiting for somene to give me some help/instructions on the creation of hull grid lines in Sketchup....I decided to start on another SF museum inspired ship. The Krechet. Again, my rendition is a little more beefier and different from the original concept.

First off, There are five impulse engines instead of four, three of them are larger.....the two mounted on either side of the shuttle bay are smaller. In the original concept, there were four.
There is a laser cannon mounted on the ventral side of the sphere similar to the original, as well as a smaller rotaing ball turret on the aft of the ship that arent on the original concept. There are three missile bays on the front and one on the back whereas the original concept had only two missile launchers.
The shuttle bay is recessed into the hull. The deflector dish/sensor array is a little more detailed than the original concept. I also lengthened the aft inline nacelle of the ship. Also, there is located on the front of the ship under the deflector array is a Romulan styled plasma beam emitter. You can see where it is partially hidden behind a sliding door. I thought it would be a nice touch of Starfleet 'liberated' the weapons technology of their enemies and adapted it for their ships.

No replies or comments? - I am still hoping for some tutorials from someone about making hull grid lines in sketchup.
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
There are a few ways of doing it in SU. One is to create a panel line master for the front, top, bottom and side views and use push pull to bring them through the hull. Then intersect. Clean up the model and use Fredo's push pull to recess the grid lines and you can use the same tool set from Fredo to raise or recess panels on curved surfaces. The follow me tool can be used to a limited extent but it really depends on the mesh geometry.

By a panel line master.....You mean in essence....creating a tic tac toe type of thing and then extending it though the model and then intersecting and then erase the master...leaving the intersecting lines in place?
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
Yes, just like that. There are some good tutorials that bbzwbbzw did to show how he created his panel lines on his SU work when doing masters for his 2D work on his thread here. I've noticed that a lot of the tutorial pics he did are down so here they are for you.

Thank you so much......I can't wait to get back to my desk and try that. Thank you for the tutorial images too. I am going to download those for reference.
now, TO make the gridlines show when edges are off, I can color those areas and acheive the same type effect?

I usually use a darker colour so that they show clearly. If you use Fredo's push pull tool kit then the grid lines will show up but as I usually only have a 5 or 6 cm gap between panels I usually use a darker colour to show them up in a render anyway. Grid lines are pretty small and on a big ship can easily disappear on you.

Here is a sample of a grid line (non Star Trek) on the red portion of the hull. I cut it in and used a darker colour to make it show up better:

Thank you again.....Will have to try that.......Now...to find that plugin for Sketchup that let's you push/pull round surfaces

Here is where you will find Fredo's stuff: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=28782#Fredo6 and the push pull one in particular. You should get the Tools on Surface one as well.

Thank you so much Cavebear. Much appreciated, Now to go home and play.

Well, This is the first rendering done in Kerkythea.......I still have a good bit of work to do......but I am liking the direction I am taking it in.

I like your take on this. There should always be a variety of ships not just what a TV show or even the Starfleet Museum shows. For every ship shown there should be dozens more that don't get shown. Those are the ones that are interesting :) That is why they need to be made!
  • rwkingrwking189 Posts: 173Member
Well, pretty much calling the AMARILLO class variant done.....I am calling the ship the UESPA SAN ANTONIO. Here are some Kerlythea renders of it.....I may tweak it a little more.....but for the most part....I am calling it done.

Well, was not happy with some of the detailing of the Krechet class rendition, so, I began anew.....and I am LOVING the way this rendition is turning out. Finally got the process for correct grid hull lines down.

I'm glad you have figured out how you want to do the hull lines. It's looking great :thumb:

Well, a big meshing error is going to cause me to do a total start over on my Krechet rendition.......Which is about normal for me...lol. In the meantime, I am playing around with an idea.......How would Starfleet build a mobile weapons platform equal to the type of thing seen in the Star Wars genre called "The Galaxy Gun"

Yes, I know that 'canon' trek would frown on such an idea......but just for the sheer fun of creating such a design.....how would you all go about it you think?
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
Never heard of a galaxy gun. From a book?
  • rwkingrwking189 Posts: 173Member
It wasn't featured in the films, but it is listed in the Wookiepedia.....the Star Wars Wiki. but the ship I was thinking about was featured in the comics....I called it a galaxy gun, but that is not the name of it....the ship I was thinking of is basically a tubular structure ith a death start type superlaser at the prow of the ship.

That would be the "Darksaber," rwking.

ahhhh....The Darksabre......Okay. - Still thinking about building my idea of what a Federation version might look like.
