I'm playing around with TheaRender still and looking at making the models appear to have depth of focus.

Today was a grind. But the hangar is as done as I am going to do right now, minus sundry items like desk chairs, pallets, general maintenance stuff. So right now I am working on the first render. I will try to get a few different views done over the next few nights. But I will get the first one up tonight at least. Maybe more if I can.

WOW! Very nice! Will you be moving on to the rest of the ship?
Come on over to my place CGI Worlds
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
Yes but I will be taking a break from it for a while. I am trying to figure out how to detail it as well as the I hope I detailed the hangar. So I will probably be putting some other stuff up for a while.

    Nice job as usual :)

    some ideas:

Mechanical equipment, ladders, fuel pipes for refueling, grounding spots(needed when refueling and handeling volatile goods), life support equipement lockers. Some DANGER stickers, a soda machine perhaps?

A storage area for dangerous goods, infective quarantine? :)

Yeah, I'll have to get working on that stuff. I've worked in aircraft hangars for 21 out of 25 years now and there are a ton of fiddly bits that will need to be created for this. I guess I should really start a "parts" library that I can go to for filling out dioramas like this. My problem with things like hoses and electrical cable is making them in SketchUp in such a way that they look right. I suck at spirals, spring shapes, helical shapes and other things which have more organic shapes. You have no idea how much I would love to create a bunch of grounding wires both rolled up and hanging off a hook and layed out on the ground from a grounding point to the aircraft. There is very little chance of SU doing it for me.
  • sorceress21sorceress21269 Posts: 577Member
Actually, it's not that hard. Just create a disc the diameter you want for your cable, set perpendicular to the deck. Then use the freehand tool to draw a line originating on the disc's face on the deck going in whatever direction you want your cable to lie. Then extrude the disc face using the follow me tool along the free hand line..And Wahlah! You'll have cables on the deck that appear to be lying naturally.

Also, I highly suggest that with your vessel exteriors you start working on rounding off your edges. If you do that as you build vs. going back and trying to modify an existing model it will be much easier. The more you do it the more familiar you will get with the process and you will learn how to correct the inevitable geometry errors that accompany organic modeling in Sketchup. Once you get this skill down it will take your SU models to the next level and you'll leave behind that "beginner modeler" look to your work that we all went through.

You're a good designer with an obvious abundance of imaginative talent...Time to step up your game. I have no doubt you can pull it off.

I resisted adding organic realism and detail to my models at first too because it seemed so daunting. It definitely will start to triple your poly count, bog down SU and will infuse you with the uncontrollable urge to throw your PC right through the window, but in the end, the results will be well worth it!

All right. Something new but actually from 1982 :)
I like Traveller so I thought I would try my hand at making the deck plans of the Eshpadir Class Orbital Installation from the original FASA plans put out in the Adventure Class Ships Vol 2.

Here is the cover with the station being second to bottom:
    Scan10020.jpg

Here is a photo I just took of the plans layed out on the floor. Too big for my scanner:
    EshpadirClassOrbitalInstallation1.jpg

Here is the description from the book (note all the errors in spelling and weapon placement):
    EshpadirClassdoc1.jpg

Here is a description of the different uses this facility can have:
    EshpadirClassdoc2.jpg

Here is my initial layout in SketchUp:
    EshpadirClassOrbitalInstallation_001.png

And here are some pics as things progress:
    EshpadirClassOrbitalInstallation_002.png

    EshpadirClassOrbitalInstallation_003.png

    EshpadirClassOrbitalInstallation_004.png

Hope the Traveller fans like it so far :)

EDIT: You may notice that the written description, deck plans and drawings have almost no relation to each other. That is typical of Traveller :( But it is still a great source for ships and what not :)

    To much cool!
As a side note, did you noticed how similar one of those ships is to the Flying sub? :)
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
    Hi Starship,

Yes, that would be the Kurgulash Class Medical Scout :)

Here are some scans from the Adventure Class Ships Vol 1:

    And second side:

Did you notice how much the Lucifer Class Imperial Destroyer Escort looks like the painting done by Peter Elson?:

    For sure!
Talking about P. Elson, he was one of the greatest from all the times. I have the TTA books, and illustrations made by him and published in several places. I canA’t remeber one of them being of bad quallity. :)

In the beginning of 80A’s, there was an album named (in Brazil) S.P.A.C.E. , which contained a few interesting ships too. A friend put scans online: http://img44.yfrog.com/gal.php?g=spacefundos75dpi.jpg.

Back on topic, youA’re doing a fine work.

Just checked the pictures out. Got some really nice old school (modern for its day) ships. :thumb:

Doing a little something with WH Keith's 1984 picture:

    What I have so far...

    TravellerFreighter-002.png

Pretty much most detail will be of my own making as this is the only picture of this ship that I have found done by WH Keith or anybody else.

The ship is 21.5 meters tall (7 decks), 266 meters long and 153.24 meters wide...so far.

    She's got bad posture...
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
Yeah, I feel for her:lol: But what is worse, bad posture or being a totally 2 dimentional CG construct? Profound philisophical stuff there eh?

Hehe reminds me of someone saying he doesn't fall in love with a random collection of bitmaps in the Tomb Raider Era :)

That being said, I love where your "kieth ship" is going :)

Well this little fighter is the most organic model I have made in SU, so much thanks goes to bbzwbbzw's tutorial. My computer is pooched so I can't render anything for I don't know how long. On top of that it hard crashes up to a dozen times a day. I also lose internet connectivity when ever I try to watch anything on the internet. Seems some windows 7 software updates have messed every thing up really bad and I don't have the knowledge to fix it.
  • cavebearcavebear179 Posts: 623Member
Well, I'm reduced to using an old lap top until I can get a new fan for my CPU. So no renders just some SU screen grabs from the same project as the O'Ryan Class Fighter.

    First a primitive orbital.
