Trying the method I was told was used to create the effect on the studio asset... I think I need to bring down the intensity of the lights and increase the falloff a bit, so there isn't such a noticeable hot spot.

Nice work on the Klingon vid! I like the alternate music too, it worked well. I always wonder why the Klingons try to escape at like impulse level 2...I suppose a huge gravity well or something

Chris, this is very nice. Is this dark because of the same no-adjustment-due-to-PNG issue your Enterprise credits?
Thanks.
No, the TOS video is intentionally darker than the raw render out of 3ds max. I usually make my renders intentionally brighter and/or low contrast, because it's easier to darken an image than it is to brighten, so I've been told.
The render right out of 3ds max makes the Enterprise look too flat, as the GI is almost similar to the lit side of the Enterprise.

I still need to add the little rock that comes apart when it hits the Constellations hull. I've been trying to figure out how to create the chunks, I've used some free scripts (like Fracture Voronoi), but they make the inside surface smooth shards and they don't look right... how can I make chunks that fit together, but aren't smooth surfaced on the inside.
The last shot isn't remotely finished... I'm thinking of making the DDM hull look more blue than purple.
Should make the hull of the Doomsday Machine somewhat translucent like the original model?
Or should I make it completely opaque?
I have never noticed that the Doomsday machine was translucent. I suspect I'm not the only one that hasnt noticed so you might end up being asked a lot why its translucent if you reproduce it?

I remember hearing that you could kind of see the "energy" part through the hull of the DDM.
Norman Spinrad was also displeased with the model used for the planet killer. As he told Allan Asherman in The Star Trek Interview Book, he envisioned a doomsday machine bristling with all sorts of evil-looking weapons. For budgetary reasons, the actual Doomsday Machine model was made by dipping a windsock in cement.
Some modifications to the DDM, what do you think? Should I proceed with the translucent hull or make it opaque... I am still gonna work on the maw interior, so the energy does cast light on the inside like in the original and remastered versions.

I like the shinier look of your newer video, but I prefer it opaque as in your older video (I'm only familiar with the remastered version, which appears to be completely opaque).
Nice work! Interesting choices with the Doomsday Machine itself.
I've always thought the translucent look was due to the limits of the technology of the day. While making mine, I wanted to remove what I thought were the limitations of the day, like the repeating inner pattern of the "fire" of the Doomsday Machine. The translucency would be something else I wouldn't repeat, but that's a personal choice.
What I can say objectively is that you are doing terrific-looking work and it is fun to see how your choices pan out and how they affect the entire piece. Keep going. It's a joy to watch.

Yea, while the translucency adds some depth and I really like it, I'll go with the opaque version.
I'm still deciding whether I want to approach the simple look of the proton beam like the original... or figure out how to do the more complex version from the remastered episode.

Hm. I've been thinking about it and now I think that's too bad. It certainly made your version unique! But I'm interested in WHATEVER you do with this project!

It appears really dark, but that's because PNG doesn't really do well with gamma correction, which I exported this viewport preview out to PNGs.

Moving along, it took a while, because I was trying to figure out how to do the debris field using particles, here I'm using Particle Flow.
The source geometry for the particles were created using Aaron Dabelow's awesome FREE 3ds max max script, Debris Maker 2: http://www.debrismaker.aarondabelow.com/v1/
