Help with making holes!?!?

Hey everyone! This is a pretty general question, but it especially goes out to some of the WH40K modellers on the site here (Binkerman, Meph, UK-Blade, andcar, eternal3lade, etc.)...

I still have problems when I am trying to make a hole through an object, for example the hole through the barrel of a bolter, or all the holes in a Space Marine Rhino's exhaust stacks... I can use booleans to do it, but it makes a horrible mess of the geometry. I'm guessing there is a way to do it using subdivision modelling, but I don't really know how to do it... does anyone have any tricks or links to tutorials that might help me?!

I am currently using Lightwave v9.6 but am transitioning over to modo 401

Thanks in advance!! ;)

oooo! I know the answer for this. While the links below are for 3ds max, the theory translates well into Lightwave and/ or Modo.

    Link1 (Circles start @ 20:38)
    Link2 (Start @ beginning)
    Link3 (Start @ beginning)

The above links build on eachother- with Link 1 being the easiest, and Link 3 being the most complex. I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to model, but I'd say that link 3 holds the most potential (but don't ignore link 1&2). Cheers!
