Love the new uniforms Josh. Less colorful, yet there's some clear distinctions between officers/ enlisted and the different types of uniforms.

Just out of curiosity, are we going to see some kind of chart for the different department insignia? (including a set of Dolphins, I'm sure ;) )

This looking quite good also love the cheer size of the Renown it fits quite well with the design lineage you put down with the Birmingham. And no need to worry Sly Assassin about the design this looks quite interesting as well so take your time ;)

All good man, that deflector is driving me nuts lol. Anyway this beast is coming along nicely, I've chucked up a wip thread in the 3d section with all the latest renders.

Quick question: Why are your airborne and propulsion officers restricted?
  • Orbital Airborne officers are Ground Operations officers and wouldn't be fit for commanding starships during combat.

Propulsion officers spend their time learning ship propulsion - everything form the science of Tachyon impellers to faster than light gravity drives. Consequently, they do not take the complex battle tactics courses of unrestricted warfare officers and they would also not be able to serve as ship commanders.

It has to do with the chain of command. On most modern vessels, Chief Medical Officers are usually of high rank (Commanders, Captains) but are outside the chain of command and as such can not give orders as such, except in their field of expertise.

A modern US aircraft carrier is a perfect example. Typically, the ship will have as many as 5 Captains aboard: Air Wing Commander, Chief Engineer, Chief Medical Officer, Ship's Commanding Officer and (sometimes) an Aide to the Admiral who commands the battle group from the carrier. Although they are of the same rank, they do not share the responsibility of command of the vessel.

I get what a restricted vs. unrestricted line officer is in the US military, my confusion was over the engineer being a restricted line officer, because in the US military they can attain the position of ship's captain, and the airborne officer not being unrestricted. In the real military restricted officers are typically non-combat types, like medical, JAG, chaplains, etc. I just had real world on the brain when I saw it.
  • I'm in the US Navy Coota so I know which officers are usually restricted and unrestricted. But in this case I'm not drawing everything straight from modern military but only inspiration. However, in the case of the United States Navy, Engineering Duty officers are considered Restricted Line Officers. In this case, EDOs are the general Engineers on a ship as their job requires a high degree of specialization/knowledge.

As for the Orbital Airborne officers. Technically they are Naval officers in the fleet but they are focused primarily on ground operations. They serve in providing ground operational information to the Navy personnel and can even take command of gun crews in the event of an orbital bombardment - putting them ahead of their naval counterparts - however they are not rated to obtain "Command in Deepspace." This qualifies them for restricted duty.

Hope that clears it up. As you can see real world was on my brain quite a bit when I came up with these.

Not criticizing, your world, your rules. Like I said when I see restricted I think non-combat, I get what you're doing (especially the Naval officer that is ground oriented) my confusion (and this may be a difference between different communities) is that a guy I went to college with is screening for command and was an engineer on a sub. Either way nice ships. :D
  • Well being a US submariner myself I can tell you that on submarines, every officer is trained to do every job. So in reality you are never "just an engineer" or "just a commanding officer." Subs are a different world then capital ships. And in the Navy, restricted doesn't necessarily mean non-combatants as we are really all combat officers. It does however mean that they are not qualified to command at sea. Which means they can't take command of the ship or a fighting element of the ship.

In this world the engineers are just too specalized to be trained in the finer points of tactics, weapons and everything else deep space combat requires and consequently must focus on their work.

And I don't mind criticism or discussion, just try to explain my points or thoughts in doing something. Give you guys a chance to see how I think (or in what way) when developing my stuff. Besides, you guys keep me on my toes and that is all I can ask for! :D

    History:
The Renown-Class Battlecruiser is the latest ship produced by the Bureau of Ships and a direct response to the rapid increase in Battlecruiser squadron production by the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Preceded by the venerable and loved King Henry-Class Battlecruiser, the RenownA’s designers were faced with filling some large shoes. However, two years at the drawing board convinced engineers to throw the old shoes out and build a brand new pair.

The Renown-Class is just that A– a whole new pair of shoes for the fleet squadrons of the Alliance Navy. At 1,270m in length, she is the largest battlecruiser built by the Alliance to date. Furthermore, she is the first battlecruiser to have the acceleration and top speed necessary to keep up with alliance cruisers and destroyers at flank speed. This means that Renown is the first ship in the battlecruiser weight class to do what was the original goal of naval theorist A– bridge the gap between the powerful but slow A“ships of the lineA” and the fast, agile A“ships of the spear.A”

In the two years since the ANS Renown left her slip at Jupiter Anchorage, the entire Renown-Class has become a living legend in the fleet and a highly desired command of any Battlecrusier qualified Captain. In her first month of operations, Renown was credited with twenty-two high profile anti-piracy missions. Furthermore, she served as the flagship of Admiral Koji Katsumi during the Verge Incursions of 2780 A– accounting for 4% of the total tonnage destroyed, an unprecedented value for a single ship in a major armed conflict.

However, the Renown is not without her weaknesses. Her high accelerations and top speeds is paid for by a much lower cruise missile capacity the King Henry-ClassA’ 220 A– though it was argued that the RenownA’s high closing velocity made a sustained cruise missile standoff unlikely. Furthermore, She carries two-third of a HenryA’s Dropships meaning Renown must rely far heavier on her cruiser escorts for small troop deployments during crisis response.

Yet despite these disadvantages A– preliminary review of the first flight of twenty ships has shown the vessels to meet or exceed the admiraltyA’s requirements in every respect, and with an additional four-hundred ships approved, it is likely that the Renown-Class will become a staple of the Alliance Navy in the years to come.

Good to see original concepts instead of the usual Star Trek/Wars stuff.
Seems that you are going for some more realism too.

What I always found idiotic is the placement of the bridge on ships in popular shows.
It makes no sense at all to place it on any exposed position. It should be buried at the centre of the ship and protected as much as possible, since it is the brain of the ship. After all you do not really need a nice view of outer space.

You could actually change the "Bridge (Bridge armor deployed)" to a simple "Observation Deck (Observation Deck armor deployed)" ;-)
  • The Brain of the ship as you put it would in fact be the CIC. The Bridge of a ship is more for manuvering and such. The reason for visuals is that there is a very real probablility during combat that sensors or telemetry may be lost. In that case, pilots would have to fly the ship with the mark one eyeball. CIC's, on the other hand, are in fact burried deep in these ships. Its a set up similar to our modern day warships and something I think makes sense for both the reasons I mentioned and the reasons you argued against an exposed bridge - its just based on what you define the bridge as in the sense of ship operations (which in your case is more a description of the CIC)

Otherwise, glad you like the work and hope you enjoy the other stuff as it comes to life.

    CHRONICLES OF MAN
    The Intersystem Alliance

After the discovery of counter mass drive technology and the slipstream terminuses leading into the Persius Expanse, rapid expansion of the human race to dozens of new worlds created a social and political vacuum among worlds. For nearly a century, earth and the other human colonies operated independently of each other with limited to no trade between earth and the other, developing system-states.

In 2242, the developing system-state of Loridin was hit by a plague that ravaged the two habitable planets and its population. Loridin's two worlds had survived mainly as low population farm worlds and lacked the medical facilities to respond to the crisis. Seeking emergency aide, Loridin petitioned the parliamentary council of the United Nations government on Earth for assistance. Because the United Nations government did not have the authority to command the UN navy to assist an extra-solar entity, it was impossible to deliver aide. Consequently, UN politicians drafted the Intersystem Alliance treaty granting worlds outside of sol sector admission to the UN. In 2243, Loridin joined the parliamentary council on Earth.

Over the next fifty years, the Intersystem Alliance treaty allowed the admission of another five worlds to the UN council. However, growing concerns of favoritism and biased to earth's needs prompted Loridin and the other extra-solar governments to push for equal representation of their worlds; population. By this point, Earth, Mars, and Europa had all become dependent on the other world's economies and the former independent UN government had limited options. On January 1st, 2300 the UN parliamentary council and UN government was dissolved and the Intersystem Alliance Government was founded.

    Government

The Intersystem Alliance (ISA) is divided into four major branches. First is the executive branch is headed by the Chancellor. Elected every six years, the Chancellor is the voice of the government; serving in the management of the government's policies and actions. The Chancellor serves as the head of the parliamentary council, voting in the event of a tie. The Chancellor also has the ability to overturn any legislation that is not passed under a two-thirds majority. In addition to the Chancellor, the executive branch is further composed of the Chancellors secretaries and advisors that make up his principal cabinet. The principle secretaries are the secretaries of State, Industry, Economy, War, and Policy. Furthermore, within the executive branch is the Joint Chiefs of Staff. These include the military heads of the two branches of the armed services; the Alliance Navy and the Marine Corps.

The second branch of the ISA is the Parliamentary Council, the legislative arm of the ISA. Members of the council are elected every four years. Each planet in the alliance has a total of four voting members except for earth, which has a total of six. The council writes, debates, and passes legislation that directs the ISA policies. The council is also the entity which approves the proposed budgets of the executive branch. Furthermore, the council holds the very unique power of being able to raise a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor, with a two-thirds majority being sufficient to eject him form office.

The third branch of the ISA is the Council of Lords. At the time of the ISA's founding, a number of worlds had adopted a monarchal style of government and a traditional monarchy had given birth to hereditary Lords. Consequently, these worlds pushed for representation of their Monarch's will through their world's Lords. After much deliberation, it was decided that worlds having hereditary Lords could have a separate quorum in which those voices could be heard. Furthermore, worlds without a hereditary aristocracy would be able to elect Lords who would serve twenty-year terms. Each ISA member world was granted one Lord seat. Currently, the Council of Lords serves as the panel of advisors to the Chancellor. However, it is an independent branch, as Lords are not appointed by the Chancellor himself/herself. In addition, the Council of Lords is the final element of the government through which all legislation must pass; though a two-thirds majority must be met for any piece of Legislature to be overturned. On the surface, it would seem that the power this body holds would reduce the rights of the common people. However, as of 2680, over eighty percent of the council is formed of elected Lords who more directly represent the people (as well as answer to them).

The fourth and final branch of the ISA government is the High Courts. The High Courts serve to interpret the spirit of the charter of the Alliance government, hearing cases of its citizens. The High Court is composed of ten High Lords. The High Lords are nominated and elected by the Council of Lords. At the time of their nomination, the Court candidate cannot be a member of any of the branches of the Alliance government. Furthermore, they must have had ten years of law experience on one of the Alliance member worlds.

    [u>]In the 2600s[/u>]

By 2600, the ISA is composed of three hundred member worlds spread across the sol sector side of the Persius Arm Terminus. In addition, thousands of additional orbital colonies, mining annexes, and research stations fall under the jurisdiction of the burgeoning Alliance, which has recently entered a self-described"golden age"; With a healthy GDP, all Alliance citizens enjoy a high quality of life. Even the Alliances former enemies, the Confederation of Independent Worlds, are trading partners. Furthermore, the ISA retains an open admission policy and does not force worlds to enter into the Alliance, but welcomes delegations for worlds seeking membership.

I'd like too add a few to that.
"If you're leaving atoms behind, you need bigger guns."
    "Peace through overwhelming firepower."
"There is no 'overkill,' just open fire and time to reload"
    "We gonna ruin somebodies day."
    "Bringing the big guns."

Gigantic :) and well thought about government as well. I, for one, am looking forward to the designs of the Confederation of Independent Worlds (when you get there of course) Considering you are on a roll with the ISA Navy it will be great to see more of their command structure.
