Since we frequently get new users asking for tutorials that they can use to get up to speed with CG, and since we don't yet have our own tutorials to direct people to (Ace and the Sensei are working on this one, be patient), I thought it would be useful to start a thread for useful tutorial links.

Here are some of mine:

Sites with lots of general tuts:

www.tutorialized.com - covers a lot of Max and Photoshop, lesser amount of Maya

www.3dluvr.com - Max, Photoshop, Painter

www.3dbuzz.com - free video tutorials on Max, Photoshop, Unrealed, and others

www.3d-palace.com - free and for-sale video tuts on Max, with a much lesser amount of Maya and some Photoshop

www.3dtotal.com - lots of tuts, Max, Painter, Photoshop, Maya

www.elysiun.com - Blender Mecca

http://www.groundzerofx.com/index2.htm - has links to max resources, and lots of links to various artists online

Sites specific to sci-fi modeling:

http://www.meshweaver.com/framesets/framesettutorials.htm - This is Fabio Passaro's site. Mario has worked on the current BSG, among other things. Lightwave-specific for the most part, but a lot of the methods translate over to other apps

http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials%20/space.htm This is "modeling space," with a lot of lightwave tutorials for sci-fi modeling

http://www.ap3d.com/betterspace/ Simply put, these tutorials are amazing stuff. Aimed at Lightwave users, but most techniques translate to other apps.

www.xenomorphic.co.uk - Pete Draper's site. Pete wrote "Deconstructing the Elements with 3D Studio Max," which is quite good. A lot of his tuts were also hosted here at SFM before the Great Crash.

http://newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/modeling/hull-plates/index.html - James Hibbert's excellent hull paneling tutorial for Lightwave.

http://www.3d-palace.com/index.php?o...976&highlight= My own hull-paneling tut for Blender and Max. Not on the level of Hibbert's, to be sure, but may still be useful.

http://www.3d-palace.com/index.php?o...004&highlight= My other written tut, this one for creating smoothed-out spaceship hulls in Blender using Subdivision surfaces. Very basic, just to get the user comfortable with using sub-d to make smooth shapes in Blender.

Matte painting, concept art, and digital painting-related tutorials (provided by Guerilla):
Guerrilla wrote:
Ok, besides www.mattepainting.org, here's a couple of ones I thought were good.

Environment Concept Art: Composition
Some composition rules and good inspiration basically.

3D Total Digital Painting Tutorials
Tutorials and making of's

Landscape Composition Rules
More composition 'rules'

A bunch of matte painting Tutorials
You should take a look at the rest of the site as well.

A couple of walkthroughs and tutorials

A big ass list of photoshop tutorials
Unfortunately not sorted in anyway, but if you're bored sometimes just work through the list. :p

Hope some of these help.

What are some other tutorials people have come across and enjoyed?

Matter of fact, I did forget a few:

http://www.culttvman.com/ -lots of images of studio models, or close replicas of them

    http://www.starshipmodeler.com/ - ditto

http://www.forbiddenplastic.com/ - for hardcore scale model folks. Good for reference

Hey Jedilaw, I thinks it's time to change your sig.

    Better?

    Now add a link!
  • JedilawJedilaw0 Posts: 0Member
Ramiel reminded me about this site:

    http://www.cloudster.com/Sets&Vehicles/Sets&VehiclesIndex.htm

They have a lot of great reference shots, especially of the TMP Enterprise model. In fact, I don't think any other site has images this good of the Connie Refit.

EDIT: can't forget this site, created by the man who painted the TMP Enterprise. Not a lot of images, but you can learn a hell of a lot about how the Aztec effect was created.

The last few I've added aren't tutorial sites per se, but there's no better way to learn how to make something than to first study it very closely. These images are, IMHO, much more useful than mere blueprints.

Come on, folks, lets get some more links up here!

Not very extensive, not very up-to-date... But I thought I add my ancient tutorials to this list just in case anybody is in need of ablative armour

Hey, I remember that tutorial! Thanks for posting it, it's quite nice.

Don't suppose you're in the mood to write more of them, are you?

Excellent list JediJaw and that Ablative Plate tutorial by Zabiegly is possibly one of my favorite tutorials ever.

    Thanks, Cris!

Care to drop a few links in the bucket here, or do you think we pretty well have it covered?

The links we have now are pretty much all of the sites that I relied upon to learn CG, but I'm sure there are tons more out there. Know of any off the top of your head?

I new one, posted in another thread originally:

    http://www.sextondesign.net/BG/html/gallery.html

There are some nice, full-color diagrams of ships from Trek and Battlestar Galactica. Good for reference purposes.

while we're on BSG - this wiki page has a few good 1080p images of the Pegasus. Great ref. if you are working on this ship...

    http://www.subdivisionmodeling.com/forums/

This is a great site that covers all subdivision surface modeling. Most of the content is organic realated but there are hard surface topics as well. They have weekly challenges as well as speed modeling sessions. Great place for SDS tips and tuts and learning great topology for your models... it's also not really application specific, so whatever you are using will be fine - from blender or wings to lightwave to maya...
  • JedilawJedilaw0 Posts: 0Member
    A couple more:

Kitscans has shots of a lot of model kits, with their pieces still on the packaging trees. Why is this useful? Well, some of the kits included are the same Tamiya kits that ILM's modelers got their pieces from when kitbashing the original models. Let's just say the Millenium Falcon has a lot of vintage WW2 parts installed on her hull.

Then there's this article by Steffan Norling, discussing CG greebling issues. It used to be hosted here, and is a very useful read for any Sci-Fi modeler.

Found a new one over at Onno van Braam's website: This i an excellent tutorial on using composite maps to apply decals in Max. Properly used, this method can save you a lot of time in unwrapping and texturing your models.

Here's a link to Coolhand's hull shaping and panelling tutorial. It's hosted in this forum, but I figured I would put the link up in this stickied thread, seeing as how the tutorial is already buried on page 2.

Stefan Morrell's hard surface texturing tutorial, at CGTalk.

I couldn't find this one in the list. I haven't tried it, but it looks invaluable if, like me, you find texturing quite difficult. Aimed at photoshop, but I didn't notice anything there that couldn't be done in GIMP (or probably PaintShop).

Here's a great tutorial page from one of the artist that worked on BSG for a few seasons, Kelly "Kat" Myers. It is a great tutorial (work in progress) but it also has some very cool insider stories along the way... worth a look even if you're just a BSG fan....

Lighting, Scene break out and compositing Tutorial for Lightwave3D and Digital Fusion - The Battlestar Galactica/Kat Way =^..^=

    cheers!

Does anyone know of or have even got a Milkshape 3D tutorial?

I'm just starting out with modelling and I didn't really want to pay the stupid amount that Autodesk are asking for.

    Kind Regards
