A great many Tamia battleships died to bring us this information.

    Nice work!

    LOL!

@Tovette: this is my own interpretation of precisely 1 reference:

With many modifications, so that won't be quite exactly how it will turn out.

As for modeling, I've been streamlining my greebling for a long time now, and plus, when the inspiration hits, it burns :)

You are officially making me look bad, Mr. "I can finish a PhD and speed-model an entire capital ship at the same time!"

Don't you have some germs that require your attention?

Fantastic work! :) already looking ten times as mean as an ISD, I'm sure it'll be phenomenal when it's done

So I decided last night to make a tower from scratch. Blend of devastator/avenger styles. Think it turned out well, and faster than I thought. Not quite as much nurnie as my ISDv2 but better integrated into this style now, and all the edges are rounded at least :).

Nah, I can't claim that title with some of the cats we have around here. At most, I am one among many who have an eye for mechanical detail. And whatever degree of skill I have with greebles was largely learned by taking Ansel's ISD v1 apart piece-by-piece and stealing ideas from him whole-cloth. That, and looking at tons of model-kit scans and pictures of real-life machinery.

@Fractalsponge: given the size of your ship, you might want to incorporate some of the details from the Executor bridge model. Granted, I know you aren't 100% in love with that model, but there are a lot of interesting pieces you can copy from it.

Incidentally, given the scale and poly-count on some of these greebles, am I correct in assuming that you aren't intending this model for usage in close-up shots?
  • fractalspongefractalsponge254 Posts: 1,088Member
^Indeed. The top shot is as close as I would expect to ever have to get. Much past that distance and a higher resolution detail model will probably be necessary, though I am always surprised by how well things can scale in a still image or animation.

Hey, I love the design of the details, but the more I look at these shots I just can't help thinking that those bevels are so thick they're throwing off the sense of scale. If you look at the HI-DEF version of ROTJ you can actually see a similar problem with the Executor tower: in the close-up shots during Tyderium's fly-by, the rounded edges on the greebles make it apparent that this is a plastic model.

How much hassle would it be to try smaller bevels on these greebs?
  • fractalspongefractalsponge254 Posts: 1,088Member
Well, not impossible, but just not happening; too many to drill into the modifier stacks for. I tend to make them a little bigger to catch the light better at distance. I find if you do really sharp rounding it's like you might as well have never bothered...

^Encountered that oo often already...all those wasted bevels

Hey didnt expect that...............is the front of the surounding (wall) going to be paneled up- for some reason it appears too thick- but then again youre not done so I will have to wait to see.

Thinking about hangars, may show some ideas later. Right now, filling in the top. Probably moving to the trench next.

    hey fractal,
beside a name...already some ideas what you plan with it?

Once again you're doing a terrific job, but I think the number of guns is just ridiculous, looks like it caught the mine-is-bigger-than-yours syndrome and it kind ruins all the hard work your putting into it to make it believable. I understand it's a different class from the victory that could be heavier armed, but still, all those turrets at the back is overkill
